View Full Version : Burning Oil?

My 2000 400ex is burning oil. I'm thinking it might be the rings or valve guides. Does anyone know about any common problems.

No motor mods only a White Brothers E Series Pipe.

Jim, my 1999 400ex and my buddy's 2001 is starting to out the exhaust. Mine is very noticeable.

We think it's either the valve seals or piston rings.

I'm not sure what the problem is. I ordered 4 new valve seals. If that don't work, I guess I'll move to the piston rings or an aftermarket piston kit.:D

I'm wondering how the 400's do when they are run really hard. When I was on my 300 and I raced the Flat River Grand Prix in 2000, I noticed a ton of 400's smoking at the end of the race. :( I now have a 400.

In my opinion (for what that is worth), you are burning oil because your oil is breaking down under the heat and getting past the rings. When my 400 was new and on the stock 10W40 Honda Oil, it would not smoke noticible, but my buddy would tell me that he could smell oil burning. I would also notice the oil level drop slightly. Since switching to a 15W50 synthetic, the smoking has stopped and the oil level doesn't drop at all. Go to the maintenance forum and search and read on 400ex oil. There is tons of good information in there about oil breakdown and what oil to use.
