View Full Version : My new 89 250R - future TT quad

DoonRider

I bought a 1989 250R. It has most of the stock goodies and that PC2000 motor. I'm going to cannabalize the stock parts and extras that came with it to fund the build of a TT 250R with the PC motor.

Looks nice, always good to have a few motors! Where you ride in Iowa?

I'm in northwest Iowa. Lookin' for places to ride, not much around here.
The big bore in the quad now is an 87. I am going to sell that to recoup some of my purchase price. The 89 is going back in it.

Northwest Iowa
- about $500 too much in my opinion. :) I bought it from the original owner who raced it TT. He hung on to all the stock stuff but unfortunately when he pulled the fenders out of the attic they had the dry checking or spiderwebs and then there are some racing items that were included. He was sponsored by Duncan so I feel the motors and cylinders are good stuff.
It came with a bunch of extras so it depends on how I turn out selling them if I got a good buy.

Stripped off some parts that I'll try to sell to put towards a-arms and a short swingarm.

It was powder painted a few years back. What's there will clean up decent but there is a few scuffs. I am not sure if I should repaint it or not. Now would be the time to do it... Have to see what I run across when I tear it down further...

Did you go to that race or couldnt make it ??.

That was a long trip for us, 26 hours one way & lord my ol motorhome & trailer axles were crying the blues running that I-90 across Iowa.
Are all the Iowa roads like that or just the main interstates, I know I-29 last year was worse than I-90 & we were running on the part that had been repaired.

I was a spectator on Saturday. I gathered you were at that race from a post that you had to TTracer who was looking for parts. I think you might have talked to the fella that sold me this quad too. He mentioned that he talked to a guy that was with a couple racers about his 250.
Freeze and thaw tears up our roads so there is constant road construction.
I'm glad you guys came. It looked like a good turn out.

So it must have been the guy we parked beside you got the R from. His number was 00 & ran in the Pro-Am class, cant remember his name though.

Jesse & Lance were the two guys running the 330 BDTM 250Rs.
We were parked right behind Michael Coburn, Harold Goodman & Chuckie Creech, motorhome & trailer was parked long ways, so you should have been able to seen it from the grandstand.
Chuckie is my soninlaw & Andrea Creech my daughter.
She raced the black & orange #33 250R & we didnt know it at that time, but she was 11 weeks expecting their first child.
I had been wondering why she was riding so slow & getting tired so quick the last few races. Was a mighty good surprize though, wife & me been waiting 25 years for a grandchild.

Congrats on the grandbaby on the way.
I was in the pits taking a pictures. I saw a trailer with a guy relaxing in a lawn chair under a pop-up canopy just a couple spots north of Colburn. I asked him if I could take pictures and then asked him how many quads were in his group. It was 9 if I remember right. You? I remember seeing Gordy on some quads, possibly.

I was just learning who was who out there so I couldn't keep everyone straight.

C-LEIGH RACING
09-26-2011, 07:33 PM
Yeah, the Gordys are our local riders from here in NC.
I remember when Eddie Gordy & his wife Debby were racing in their younger days, back when we started in 1987.
I beleave they did have 9 quads in their trailer. Gordys had four quads + an extra quad for back up & then Rick Stanley had his two quads in there as well & then two kids quads.
Long a trip as it is, some of the riders bunch up their quads with who ever has room & then the riders fly out.
We have a 24' trailer full to begin with & then we have to leave out earlier than everybody else so we can inspect the track make sure its up to par.
Wife & myself sitting on the EDT board.

I tore this thing down to the frame tonight. My plan was to paint it clear red but the old paint is in nice shape, so I am having second thoughts. There are a couple scuffs and two rust spots that I would like to fix so I am leaning towards having it repowdered.

Any tips or suggestions? Anywhere that I wouldn't want to sandblast? What should be plugged when it get's painted?
Stem bearing area and brake pedal mount possibly?
Appreciate any info. It's nice to learn from others's experiences.

DoonRider

I am a little nervous the sandblast guy won't want to remove powder. Some say its tough, other say it's no problem.
Here's that rust.

Burns310r

Where in iowa are you? If your anywhere near fairfield iowa, then i have a solution for you.

My father owns a thermal sand bed company that strips paint from metal. Its non abrasive and probably the safest way to remove paint.

I do it to my frame every 2 years or so.

Throw it in the sand band for an hour , comes out perfect new metal. Then weld/fix the frame however i want and take it to the powder coaters.

All the atv guys in the area bring there frames/parts to him to get cleaned.

The bed is actually used for taking the paint off of John Deere hang tooling. The paint gets built up on the hooks that they hang parts/machinery off of and has to be cleaned. Since dads bed doesnt get over 800 degrees, it will not soften the metal any.

let me know if your interested.

I'm in the northwest corner. I like the sound of that process. I'll think about it after I get a feel from our local sandblaster.
If I was closer, I would look you up for sure.

The normal places the new model frames are prone for cracking.

The rear engine mount tube between the main frame rails.

The left lower engine mount on the bottom frame rails.

The two front mounts will crack, split like around the holes.

Those two tabs sticking up that mount the front of the seat to the frame will bend & crack.

The subframe, down at the bottom behind the swingarm bolt & up at the top on the end where the rear of the seat mounts, that flat piece cracks around the edges.

Check the head stay itself, sometimes it will break the tube on one end or the other.

What you need to plug before PC,,, any & all of the bolt holes with either a cork plug or a bolt screwed into the holes to keep the PC from getting in.

Any hole in the frame where a bolt will go through, those holes will be just a hair bit smaller after the PC & be sure to remember, once done & putting it all back together, when mounting up the ignition coil clean off the PC from the mount points so it will have good metal to metal contact.
It realy wouldnt hurt before you put the engine back in the frame, to clean the PC off at the mounting points so to have metal to metal contact between the frame & engine.
A good ground contact between engine & frame is important for the ignition system to work proper.
Neil

DoonRider
10-05-2011, 08:46 AM
Thanks! Engine and frame contact for the iginition - that is good info.
Where the steering stem bearing sits - I assume to keep this in tolerance for the new bearing, this will need to be plugged, right?

C-LEIGH RACING
10-05-2011, 08:57 AM
Down in the bottom of the frame, yes.
Would be best to pull the seal, circlip & bearing out & then somehow plug the hole, or else you'll be cleaning PC out so you can get the bearing & clip back in place.

Something else,
anywhere you see a rust spot, specially if it is at a weld joint, if the rust or popped off paint kind of follows the edge of the weld bead, that is a sign there is a crack because it has flexed the crack enough that the paint broke loose & came off.

You'll have to look at thoses places real close to see the cracks.

The sandblaster said removing the old powder was labor intensive. Burns310r suggestion is the way to go if you have a facility like that available in your area.

Went with Diamond Vogel Bright Red ET-5394 powder with a coat of clear. The painter did a nice job. This fussy pric couldn't find any flaws.
Ordered a-arms, swingarm, bearing carrier and some other goodies. Found a bumper and sway bar on ebay.
Polishing the aluminum parts.
Hopefully I can do a bunch of assembly next month.

Shroud, brakes, temp gauge, and nerfs added:
Polished up the old nerfs, washed the nets, and put new stickers on them. Rebuilt brake calipers from East Coast ATV, brake lines from ebay seller allracesuspension. Still waiting on shocks.

Wish the shrouds were ppolished more but I think they will get decals on them, so it won't be as noticeable.

I'm not sure what it will be - I left that to Baldwin's judgement based on the information he requested. I'll let you know what it ends up being. You have any advice or suggestions?

I just recently set my R up for ice racing. I'm at 5 3/4 with no rider. Just wanted to compare mine to a quad that has been setup correctly.

Keep up the great work, that thing looks Awsome.

WOW - EYES bulging out.

Nice build. With all the builds that have happened on this section - including mine to come soon. I haven't seen anybody put a new set of OEM fenders on yet.

You must have a couple sets? Seeing how much they go for for the resto guys I'd have a hard time doing that if I knew they were going to get dirty.

DoonRider

They are nice used fenders that were on my 88 when I bought it. I was never a fan of the rear cut like it is, but I thought this application would be a good fit for them. If they weren't cut, I would have them stored away somewhere.
This "race" quad will have an easy life ahead of it as long as I have it.
