I was wondering what the best 440 big bore kit is and wondering how the reliablility has been with these kits and also did you have to pipe it or jet it with this kit?

HEY! I have the IMS 440 kit - LA Sleeve, JE Piston.....I love it. I also have the WB track cam - K&N Filter/Dyno Jet kit - FMF Header with WB E-Series pipe..........so far so good! I have a Barnett's Dirt Digger clutch with a Hinson basket, too......and I change my oil VERY regularly, or I notice my clutch starting to slip a tad......but like I always tell everyone - I wouldn't spend money on the engine until you get your suspension set up! :) Or you can just do it all at once, like me!

I picked this kit because I heard JE Pistons were good ones, and that the 11:1 compression ratio was the closest to actually being 11:1 out of all of them. The piston fits well in the sleeve - and everything went together without a problem.

My engine runs hotter, and the headpipe will glow at night, but that's normal. Ummmmmm I would say if you are going to go this big to definately get a full pipe system - let it breathe as much as it can. And rejetting is a definate! :)

Hope that helps a little!

I have Elka triple rates (0 preloads) on the front and a rebuilt Elka 0-preload on the back, along with +3+1 Ricky Stator A-arms and tie rods and a +4 Dominator Axle on the rear.....:D :D :D I love everything on it....no problems with anything so far....very surprised with my Ricky Stator A-arms...I've done some things to those that should have at the very LEAST bent a tie rod or two!!!

I was curious about motor work also. I have done all the mods to suspension now the motor needs to be freshened up. With your 440 you have a stock carb? I was thinking about getting a 39 fcr because i need a new carb anyways a arm inside my stock one broke off and now my bike wont idle. But anyways you said the bike runs hot? My 400 already runs hot and it is stock so that makes me wonder if i should get the 440 , what kind of gas do you run? Thanks

I have my stock carb - didn't need a new one, and that way if I want a new kick in the pants I can either polish the one I have or buy a new one! :) My stock one is fine though......

As for running hot - I still have my stock oil cooler - I am going to be getting a larger one before summer - my air scoops help alot, so I'm not worried about it until it gets to be July or so. I run 110 or higher if I can find it - leaded! :) And I use synthetic oil.....

What kind of carb would you get? Your going to get a new cooler? Do you think a stock cooler with a bigger oil tank would do the trick also? I have a cannondale also, i just want my ex to be as fast as my cannondale. What do you think is your ex as fast as a cannondale?

Thanks. It's a Noleen header and silencer. When I first got the bike my buddy friend used to work at Noleen so he hooked me up for 200 for the header and silencer.

they only way to make you 400ex to be as fast as a dale is to make it a dale, or do a major motor work such as national kits and stuff

Hehe Chad has a 505 EX, ask him how fast that goes:)

You really dont have to run high octane fuel unless you raise the compression so much to where it will cause pre ignition. But its a smart idea anyway because it will run smoother I guess. Race fuel runs cooler thats always good.

Hey 400grl, Just taking a guess, have you checked the color of your spark plug lately? Does your header glow just near the cyclinder where they come out? From my experience a header usually doesnt turn red hot unless there is unburnt fuel in it, which either means the bike is running to lean, or you have a leaking exhaust valve. This is most likely not the case and it is probably just heat transfer, but that is really weird to me, wouldnt want that =P..

At night, I've noticed my header glowing right where it comes out of the head......I think I have a slight exhaust leak right there, becuase there was no gasket that came with my FMF head pipe.....it's just metal to metal, and it can't be flush.......I'm going to try to get a gasket from another headpipe and see if I can trim it to fit.

I run the race gas to try to extend the life of my engine as much as possible - I figure anything that will help it run cooler is a good thing......and I would think keeping the stock oil cooler and getting a larger oil reservoir might help a little - but a bigger oil cooler is the best way to go. At least, it's the most effective in getting your oil cool.......

My 440 kit was about $230 and then I paid about $120 to get the sleeve pressed in. Then another $120 or so for the cam - not too bad for engine mods.

There is NO WAY my 440 is as fast as a Cannondale! Maybe if it was 40 lbs lighter and had fuel injection and different engine! :) I've beat Cannondales, but it was only because of the rider!

hey 400 grl could u post some pics of your quad?
what's your age?
and one more thing, when you are going to sell your quad, let me be the first to know ok?lol

are those raptor fenders?

400grl

The fenders are Honda - just the hood is Raptor.....:devious:

That looks cool. What kind of raptor hood is that? Fullbore? Maier? So you mounted the raptor hood onto oem honda plastic? Sweet idea!

400grl
02-25-2003, 10:22 AM
It's OEM Yamaha - just the replacement hood for a Raptor - I got it for about $25.00........I cut my stock plastic to fit it!

400grl, you say you think you may have a leak where the header comes out of the head because the FMF header didnt have a gasket?? Well all you have to do is buy the Honda OEM copper crush gaskets that go in there stock and they will work fine!! It will definatley leak without them! I think running race gas is good for extending the life of your engine even if you dont need it, but I dont think another oil cooler is necessary! If any motor needed an extra oil cooler then it would be mine, but matter of fact Tom at TC made me sell my FST cooler after I bought it and said I dont need it!! He said you only need one if you run a big bore in XC or desert races!! Otherwise save your money! He said as long as you change the oil when it needs to be(and in my case run high octane gas) your engine is fine!!
Also, there is no doubt that a 440 built right will stomp the life out of a stock or slightly modded Cannondale all day long, seen it happen every time we go to the drags!!!

02-25-2003, 11:31 AM
Chads right 400grl...get the copper crush washers for the header pipe and it will fix that problem...there cheap too..:D

400grl
02-25-2003, 11:31 AM
Hey! Thanks for the info on the gasket!!! I will get one - I don't have anything on there and I hate that ticking sound! :) You don't have a larger oil cooler??? I change my oil alot, because it breaks down so quick........the 440's around here are all running the larger coolers, and so are a few stockers! I just haven't gotten around to it yet....but it's good to know that it's not imperitive!

110 race fuel is WAY TOO HIGH for that comp ratio, your wasting money and losing power

400grl,,I may be wrong(didnt feel like reading through this thread again!!) but it seems like I remember you saying you run synthetic?? If your running synthetic and your oil keeps breaking down that fast then I think you may have a lean problem or something! A 440 will run a tad bit hot, but not hot enough to break your oil down fast like that, especially synthetic. On my 505, I have been to the rides(havent had a race yet)4 times(not including all my yard time!!!),, and my oil is still good, and I run Honda non-synthetic 20-50 and NO auxillary oil cooler! My 505 actually impressed me with the temp it runs at,,I do have the air scoops and a larger oil tank, but now that Ive got the carb set good it actually stays a pretty good temp, even after a few runs down the drag strip!! Just riding around and even drag racing all day, I dont need another oil cooler, I dont think that a 440 should need one either!!

You can get OEM raptor plastic in red? thats cool

Yep - the '03 models have red hoods - they also have cool carbon-fiber lookalike hoods........

Do you think that raptor hood would fit a 300ex if it was properly 'jigged' ?

400 grl u have the same opinion of mine and taste for quads!!
my dream quad is a raptor but afetr a lot of thinking i decided not to.
besides ther things, it's too heavy!!
but i love it's visual!!
and u got it for you honda!!(i mean the plastic!)
now the only thing missing here is a pic of you!

400grl
02-26-2003, 07:42 AM
Jay - not sure.....I would think it would as long as the front plastics are very similar - especially the slope of the hood......that would be something you would have to take a close look at. It helps if you have access to someone with a Raptor - you can gank their hood and try just placing it on top of your plastic to see how it would line up...... :)

Stock400 - I used to have a Raptor but had to decide between keeping it or my 400.....I picked my 400 because I was used to it and was racing it. I miss the Raptor - fortunately my boyfriend has one so I can ride it anytime I want! And I've posted a pic of me before on this board......do some looking, you can probably find it! ;)

No exhaust gaskets please tell me that with a fine scooter like that you or your boyfriend are not the one's turning wrenches on that beauty (except the CRAPTOR hood):p ;)

02-26-2003, 08:16 AM
Yeah - we have done all the work on it except pressing the sleeve........:macho :D Besides.....what's a little gasket? A missing bolt here ....a leaking seal there......no biggie! ;) j/k! By the way, it is ok to just add water if I run out of oil, right?

If your thinking about sending you engine off to get the kit put in you should think about Hetrick Racing. There prices are reasonable and there customer service is great.
