So i need some help guys, my 400 quit on me tonight. :( just sputtered a few times and died. theres spark, gas, and air there but just not sure what it could be.
wasnt any smoke that i saw but wasnt really paying attention.

Any help?

i think that the carb should be good and theres only 1 boot right, just the one to the air box that could get dirty. what does the hose that goes into the side of the intake do?

what are the symptoms of bad valve seals?

does it just quit? maybe the rings went instead after a bit of searching around?

maybe my motor got all messed up by the guy i got it from.

Dang man that's a lot if threads one after another. The tube going into the side of the intake is a breather for the motor. Sounds like you might have carb problems. Maybe some trash blocking the jets make sure your kill switch is off. But it sounds like to me your not getting gas that's what I'd check first.

Then it's flooded if you can smell it. Take off the air cleaner and clean it up good and let it dry. While it dries take off the carb check you float for holes and clean everything real good with some carb cleaner. And make 100% sure it's gettin a good spark. Change the plug in case it's fouled also check the spark plug gap. After you do all that let us know how it goes. Also check simple stuff oil level, the kill switch and anything else that you can check.

it wasnt flooded when it just died though. thats the problem with it and why i dont think the carb is the issue.

all an engine needs to run is air, fuel and spark. If its getting all of those then it is something internal engine.

if your tail light is burned out, the timing will be 180 out.
turn the quad upside down and it should start fine,
or
replace the tail light bulb.

I always thought the head light had control on the timing since it burns more energy?

If you were just riding along and it started sputtering and died, its most likely trash in the main jet. Its probably flooded from you pumping the throttle trying to get it to start. Take the spark plug out and clean it up and let your cylinder dry out. Take the carb apart and poke some fine wire through the jets and blow air through them while you have them out. Put it all back together and you should be good.

Also bad valve seals have no effect on the starting of an engine. She'll puff some smoke when you start it if they are shot, though.
