.........who the hell puts copper washers around spark plugs?!

(keep in mind the KTM motor doesnt have an easily acessable crank to set TDC)

Had the spark plug off to see the piston to set TDC to adjust the valves and as I was pulling it out, a little copper washer fell inside the hole for the spark plug...

now i gotta pull the damn head to get to it.

How is this possible?

JAKELTR450

The copper washer would be bigger than the hole it fell into? if it was a washer for the spark plug. how is that possible?

suck my pipe

When I installed my Hot Cam, i dropped a bolt and as unlucky as I am it managed to fall right down in the spark plug hole. Same story pull the head wait for the new head gasket to come in. what a pain.

That does suck. A piece fell in rite? They use the rings as a crush seal..haven't seen them alot but they do use them.. Was this a oem plug?

Same here…..How dose this happen?
I always blow or wash out the plug area before I take the plug out so dirt doesn’t fall in. But how can the washer go in unless it was damaged.

I'm also curious how this could happen. If it was a washer on the spark plug, the washer would be bigger then the hole, therefor couldn't fall in... Are you sure it was a sparkplug washer?

i hear your pain my buddy was putting my head back onto the cylinder last year and lining up the timing chain (yamaha has the bright fudgin idea to put a timing chain on the same side as a fly wheel) anyways it dropped and got stuck to the flywheel lucky for us we put a fresh side cover gasket on and didn't run the motor sbut man we were both cussin up a storm...

I don't see how this could have happened either.. It's like the manhole covers, they don't fall in the hole while the try to take them out..

Unless it was really damaged and maybe split in 2 maybe have fell in, but the whole thing falling in is impossible

Aren't all timing chains on the same side as the flywheel? Otherwise you would have to try to fit the timing chain gear and the clutch on the same side....

Instead of ripping the engine apart you could have flipped the quad on its back and blew air into the hole .

Before I went through all that, Id try to take a shop vac, and one of those long funnels that tapers down to a small point. Put the end of the shop vac tube into the large end of the funnel so it still has suction and see if that small end of the funnel will grab it enough to fish it out. If the small end of the funnel still aint small enough to go into the plug hole, try to put a small piece of hose ( fuel vent hose, or something) on the end of the funnel, and keep reducing until you get something that will drop in the plug hole.

Almost positive a magnet wont stick to copper.

FML in order to get the cams out you have to break the cam chain on this motor......good ol KTM inginuity.

Tommy Warren
09-01-2011, 07:13 PM
is there no chain tentioner can't you unbolt the sprocket from the cam? or pull the fly wheel? is there a master link on the cam chain? I don't understand

it wont and give him a break hes a Canadian :p. i have had a shim break when sliding the crank case cartridge into a cannondale but as everyone else stated that crush ring should not have fallen in unless it was damaged

No in order to take the head off the chain has to be broken, and it requires a special tool.....the timing chain coes thru the head and then attaches to the cam sprocket...such a dumb way to do it.

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

just a normal chain breaker should do right?! : (

Cut the chain off and install a new link which has to be staked on.
If you own a ktm you should have several extra links in your inventory .

You definately could have got it out without tearing your motor apart. I'm guessing you haven't seen too many motors apart. Pistons get "dirty". :p

But yes, I hear you on the t-chain. That's just the way they are.

now i gotta pull the damn head to get to it.

I actually used to do that when I had the kx125. The washer was thinner than what came on the spark plugs so it set the electrode a little bit into the cylinder. If you ever pull the head off and look, the bottom of the plug is still in the plug hole. I got a better burn and noticeably better throttle response out of it.
