Hey all. New guy here. Just starting to do my own little low buck project... Got an 86 LT 250r for $400 bucks the other day, and pretty much only got a new set of Holeshots LOL. The frame has a few minor cracks, nothing too big for my welder to handle... The swingarm is trashed though. The old R motor has a hole the size of an apple at the kicker and a bad stator...
Regardless, I have the time and patience and know how to get it back in shape. Its getting prepped right now for an 86 CR 250HPP motor. I'm sure that I may end up hitting you guys up with questions. Just figured I'd say hi!!! LOL

Pulling the A-frames now, got the grinder out and finding some very poor rookie welds.... This is definately some back woods half @$$ shizz right here..... LOL.... Pics coming tonight.

Too dark to get pics.... Heading to Sarasota tomorrow for parts..... Grinding to resume afterwards, then painting the wifee bike :muscle:

well........... got quite a bit of the frame work done today.... If it wasnt for the fact that the frame is all original 86, I'd junk it.... was like welding paper with a blowtorch... Managed to get another motor though. 89 RM 250 powervalve motor, JUST rebuilt, new top and bottom end. Was built for a shifter cart so it's straight geared, no clutch... Good use for the Barnett basket and clutches LOL. Now its time to find a new intake, reed cage and CDI box....

crlt250r
08-30-2011, 05:25 PM
so....... yeah..... coming up on some serious drawbacks with the electronics with this thing...... As I stated before, I'm trying to do this thing low buck.... But I have a bit of a problem with paying $500 for a stinking CDI box........ Was hoping that I could find an interchange list that could tell me what else to use, but the box for this motor had 4 different part numbers and all but 1 are obsolete.... I'm to the point now of considering a complete change of the stator, mag ...... the whole works.... I dont know... Any ideas???

So, got the motor all mounted up, frame mods are nearly done, tabs are made up. Don't have any pics yet, but after I get the gussets welded in, I'll snap a few. Now just really have to get up to the the machine shop and get some spacers made up for the swinger, and get the new pivot bearings for it. Got ahold of an old pro circuit CR pipe, will be cutting that up soon to get it in.... With the time that I have available, might have it up and running in about 3 more weeks.... :D

Got the motor mounted up, going to be using the old Pro Circuit pipe... Had to do some cutting and clocking to get it to work right but didnt have to cut out any length, so it should be pretty good. Waiting for my spacers and pivot bearings. All thats really left to do is to get the piston and rings ordered. Friggin stoked!!! It was dark by the time I got the pipe done soooooo...... pic kinda sucks LOL

Well, got the new swinger pivot bearings and seals in, picking up my cylinder tomorrow. Putting in a 67.75mm Wiseco. Only thing left is to get the spacers in between the swinger and motor. Should be kicking it over for the first time on Sunday. It's come together really quick..... Pics and hopefully a short video this weekend sometime :-)

So yeah, got the CR motor all put back together, and assumed that whatever it was that smashed the old piston to hell was gone. Welllllllll got it fired up for about 15 seconds and shut it down to adjust the idle. Couldnt get it fired back up, even tried to pull start. I noticed that the compression was a little low while kicking and pulled the head... yeah, the "new" piston is now in just as bad of shape as the one that I replaced.. Soooo, pulling the cylinder tomorrow and hopefully it didnt trash the fresh bore and hone I just had done. Then splitting the cases and finding what kind of gremlins are in there eating pistons.

09-30-2011, 06:29 PM
Got the new crank in, cases put back together, gears looked really good for their age! Ordered the crank off eBay, and for only 35 bucks, got a relatively new hot rods crank!!!!!! Took about 45 minutes to get the motor bolted back in the frame and two kicks..... Wait for it...... THE BEAST LIVES!!!!!!!! I found however, that the twist throttle is totally greek to me, shortly after I ran it into my fence, with no brakes... It was very slow, no damage LOL. Now its time to pick up a clamp on filter, get all the nuts and bolt double checked, and ride out! Needless to say, I'm freakin stoked!! Pics to come once the plastics are all bolted in :macho :macho :macho :macho

Just got both of our bikes loaded up on the trailer, leaving Tampa right now. Going up to palatka for some river time, then off to Ocala to see how this beast runs..:) Update to come later this week. Wish us luck!!!

crlt250r
10-04-2011, 08:45 PM
Got up to Palatka with no issues with truck or trailer, went to unload our bikes and noticed that the idle screw somehow got spit out of the carb..... I have no clue how it happened, but it did. Drove up to st. Augustine and got another one ordered, with next day pick up..... 60 frikkin bucks.... For a screw... Bought it anyways because we're heading home Thursday, and I would hate to bring it all the way here just so it could stay on the trailer all week, so 60 bucks it is. Picking up in the morning, riding the resevior in the afternoon.

Managed to get the bikes into ocala national forest. First real ride since getting it all back together. Runs awesome!!! Found that I need to invest in some more lock washers. Everything is coming loose LOL. Did get up to St. Augustine to pick up the idle screw, and after about 45 minutes of riding, realised that it got spit out again.... Also need to invest in some locktite I guess. Overall, I'm quite impressed, she runs really strong, just smokes a whole lot.... Got it mixed at 40:1 and now I'm hoping that there isn't an issue with the gasket between the crank and tranny. Will find out tomorrow when I recheck the oil.

Quads are back home. They ran great! Found a tear in the case gasket, really not too sure how it happened, but whatever LOL. First time out and I was very impressed with how it ran, other than things coming loose and shooting the muffler off.... LOL. Again, it was extremely low buck to put it all together, but it is right, so that's all that matters. Going to order a complete gasket kit and new crank seals, and do some extreme locknutting on the mounts. Should be ready for new plastics in another month or so. :D

It's been awhile, but everything is all back together. Just got a new TMX in place and got rid of the old tm. Quick video, no ride, not enough room at the house for this one to open up LOL Now just have to get rid of the ugly stickered up purple plastics and get a new seat cover.

In the process of changing out the rotted magnesium 1 piece clutch cover. Lucked out one found an 89 2 piece on eBay. New water pump, new gaskets again. Need to pick up some more bolts so I can seal up the outer cover. Maybe I'll be able to call this done, and put the money into plastics soon...

Went out for a ride last Thursday, happened to run across a nice little cypress knee hidden in some grass... Needless to say, got another frame coming. Going 87 this time for the better suspension, and got an idea for a totally different rear suspension set up. Going to get it pc'd after getting the motor mocked up, thinking about going with a candy purple, maybe over silver vein. Kinda bummed, but all that broke was the frame, not my bones LOL

Looking at the rails that need replacing on my frame, I started to wonder..... While I'm at it, how much work would it take to fab up a flip top for the rear plastics on this thing. Any insight? Suggestions?

Nearly done with tear down. Looks like its goo.g to be a lot less fun than it was the first time. Just noticed that one frame rail that I have to replace is bent to hell anyways.

Got both rails cut out and new tubing welded in. Fabbing up new arm mounts and have them welded in hopefully by Wednesday night. On call this weekend, do its going to sit as is. No garage, and I ran out of light this evening.

Got the RM motor in. Crazy thing about this one is that it sits about an inch and a half off center. The plug is actually sitting outside of the upper frame rail. Of course the kicker is hitting the frame, and the pipe is going to need some work to make it line up right with the silencer. Will need to make up a bushing for the swinger bolt because the RM bolt is around 5/8, when the LT is about 7/16-1/2 inch. Going to start concentrating on the front framing to mount up the motor mounts, then start on the kicker and pipe mods. Here she is as of right now.

Got the front framework made up, and drilled. Welded in 4 dowels and got the front brackets bolted in. Figured out the lower mounts. Going to weld 4 dowels into the lower frame rails, then reinforce with some welded on flat stock to keep it from fatiguing at the dowels. Going to use the RM head stay brackets and bolt them to the frame and to the lower end of the case. I've decided to not run the head stay. The LT frame tends to flex a bit, and I'm not going to take the chance of blowing the head gasket due to a flexing frame.

No new pics as of now, ran out of light again. Will see if I'm awake enough in the morning to remember before leaving for work.

Some shots of progress this afternoon. Y'all can see just how off center it is in the frame this time. Had to set it this far just to get the sprockets lined up. Was actually worried that I may have to grind off a bit of the pivot, but didn't have to. Was able to get it wired and test fired. Sounds great, really good compression. Now its time to strip back down, finish up the last bit of welding, then its color time! Enough talk, here's a couple pics from today :-)

Is it gonna work with the tank and everything after modifying the top of the frame?

crlt250r
06-13-2012, 08:32 AM
Yeah. Tanks been mounted once, last night for the test run. Most of the framework was just on the lower rails. Now the only problem is figuring the best way to mount the cdi. It was only held on with a rubber strap, and doesn't have holes for a bolt in mounting.

Loaded up and took the heap out yesterday. The rm motor runs amazing! It's completely stock, other than jetting, and the DG silencer. Trails are a bit tight, and haven't gotten to put the .Peps on yet so barely managed to get it into 3rd gear LOL. Had to keep stopping so the Mrs and my sons could catch up :-) Anyway, my carrier slipped, and chain bound up. Luckily no damage. Got it straightened out, cut out two links and got back on the trail. After about 2 hours of running, lost rear brakes. Overall was a great outing other than the rain. Couldn't get any pics or video.

I'm on call next weekend, so there's no riding for another two weeks, but should be camping out on the 7+8. Need to take care of the carb issues with the kids bikes and get my brakes straightened out. Should get some good pics and video then.
