computer help

My parents are in Germany and I tried to get skype working to talk to them and they cant hear me. I plugged in an external mic and still nothing. I know its the computer and not skype cause ive used it quite a few times before. Is there a driver I can download to fix this problem?

Also my CD/DVD drive isnt reading cds anymore. Is there also a driver for this?

Its an HP pavilion laptop with vista.
