I just bought an 01 400ex and the previous owner said it has a broken cam shaft and needs rings. I plan on fixing this myself. I want to get a stage 2 hotcam and wiseco 11:1 compression piston. What else would i need to make this run like new again. I also plan on getting everything shimmed and adjusting the valves.. Thanks for any help..

It's probably gonna need new rocker arms, I would get hardened rocker arms, not stock.

I have never heard of a bike breaking the cam, But if it broke the cam look at the head and inspect it carefully to make sure there is no unusual scarring or markings where the cam goes,if it is scaring I would go ahead and get a whole new head cause putting a hot cam in their is just going to make the scarring worse if it's scarred.

Check to make sure the valves are not bent, make sure that they are seating good, check for carbon build up on them.

There is probably going to be some metal shavings in the motor since it broke the cam make sure you drain the oil and get all the metal shavings out.

Stock rockers are just fine. Hardened rockers are only needed for a wild built motor.

i am allmost 100 % sure u can not in any way break a cam he most likely broke the timeing chain or it has worn out and streched i would be will to put money on it. and u wont really know about the rings and **** untill u get in there and look at it maybe u can fix the timimg chain and it might run great

I have never heard of a cam breaking either. I am hoping it's just the timing chain, but either way i plan on getting the stg 2 HC. Thanks for all of the help.

I highly doubt the cam shaft broke, but I do think the timing chain is toast. At the minimun your going to need a new timing chain (a chain from a CFR is much stronger), and a new timing chain tensioner. I'll bet the valves are bent. They too will need to be replaced along with the valve seals. While you are there, I'd pull the cylinder and bore it out to the next size, and put in a new piston and rings. And last but not least, and new top end gasket kit.

At this point, your top end is basicly new and will give you many years of trouble free service.

Well i've got it all torn apart. Cylinder walls are warped, valves are good, cam isnt broken but could be worn out, and the crank shaft bearings need to be replaced. I've been thinking about it and i want to know what you guys think about stroker kits. http://www.lukesracing.com/luksr/trx460kit.htm
That is the kit i've been looking at. Any thoughts?

Look at the poweroll 440 stroker kit. 4mm stroked crank and 87mm 11.5:1 piston. It will be more reliable then that 460 kit.

The problem i have with that is the compression. I want to be able to run pump gas.
