Rotella T 15w40 conventional works great! No clutch slippage issues in either of my quads using this oil...

Rotella 15w40 in the white jug/bottle from Walmart is the one you want. Won't make your clutch slip and is an excellent heavy duty conventional. If you wanted to run the full synthetic version, you want the 5w40 in the dark blue bottle. I have run both and the 400 runs great on either.

The 10w30 made your clutch slip because that particular viscosity grade is blended with friction modifiers for use in car engines. A big no no for our wet clutches, and the 30 weight is not sufficiently thick enough for what the 400EX motor needs. You need at least a 40 weight. Honda specifies a 10w40 or a 20w50 for extended high speed operation/hot temperatures. I like to run Maxima 15w50 full synthetic ester-based oil in the hot summer months myself. More expensive, but some of the best stuff you could possibly run in this motor.

you should use 10w-40. i use pezille and i dont have any clutch slippage. honda oil is a waste of money. the other oils do the same thing

I get mine at Auto Zone cause its closet to the house. We have a aO'Rielly's too but farther away. It cost 5.99 a quart but its well worth it. I can tell when I've changed the oil. We ride alot of long distance and do to the heat and humidty of East Tenn. it holds up great against thermol breakdown.

I'll have to check AutoZone then. I checked my O Reillys last week and all they have is Lucas Oil additives.

Its not all county roads. We can ride Windrock Mtn.(Coal Creek OHV),Upper Cumberland WMA and Brimstone Rec. all from one starting point. They all tie in together for a total of 244,000 acres. That only 3 of the many places to ride here in east Tenn.

I.use Amigo oil filters. A freind owns a shop and I get them for 3.00 a peice. I put a new one every time I change my oil which is 25 running hours in the summertime. 30 hours in the winter.

I've been running castrol 4T motorcycle 20w50. I can get it around here at autozone for $3.99qt. Ran it for years and I just tore my motor apart to replace wore out trans gears and the motor was spotless inside. But I do try and change it often.

With the 400 being air cooled and that they always run hot, it breaks down the viscosity of the oil pretty fast.Thats why I wouldn't waste your money on expensive synthetic oils. But whatever oil your using, you should change it pretty often.

I've used Castrol for years myself and still do. The Lucas does seem to hold up better that the Castrol when riding in the heat.

I've got one of those COMP Flow stainless steel mesh type oil filters that you clean out with brake/carb cleaner. I've had it for over a year and had no problems with it. I've probably saved quite abit from not buying a $7+ oil filter everytime I've changed the oil.

What do you guys think about running Rotella T 15w40 in a 450 racing mx? "Bigger" name brands are starting to get pricy changing it every weekend

If you want a stout 10w30 just run the Rotella T5 10w30 (Synthetic Blend). It is not specifically labeled as a JASO-MA oil but it is an HDEO and will withstand anything an ATV can do to it. I have been running it for over 5 hours now with zero trouble.

For 2012, Honda actually recommends a 10w30 year round in the 400X. The manual says you can run a 10w40 in extreme heat.

The problem with most oils is that they are "friction modified." Shell/Rotella has stated that none of the HDEO Rotella oils are friction modified. So, use any of the Rotella oils with confidence.

FWIW, my 2012 400X turned Valvoline ATV 10w40 into water after about 2.5 hours and gave me poor clutch feel and a "clunking" when going into/our out of neutral. I ran the Rotella 15w40 for 10 hours and never had a hiccup.

anyone try running 20W-50 to help with cooling?

powerbomb400
12-25-2011, 06:46 AM
I do in the summertime. In the winter I go to 10w-40. The 20w-50 is thick and makes it hard to turn over when its 15 degree's outside.

I'm a Castrol nut and when it gets hot here in Tennessee and the humidity is up there I don't my oil to start breaking down. Sometimes when we get down in a hollow there won't be a bit of a breeze. Only what you make.

People I ride with use Rotella. Designed for diesel engines that have extreme pressure. As long as you change the oil on a regular schedule is the name of the game. I can buy Castrol for the same price as Rotella so I just going to be stubborn.:)
