i just purchased a piece of land along the wabash river and it is mainly a camp/party sight and i see some people have water filter systems at some camp sights that pulls water out the river, filters it and it's somewhat fresh.

i have no idea what it's called and don't know where to begin. can anybody help me out with this, thanks.

why can't you do that stuff without the water being filtered. just use a pump IMO

You can either:
1. Get one of those super $$$ systems, where upon filtering you would need to store it in something, then either be gravity fed or pumped somehow from the holding tank to whatever faucet or such you want it to come out of.

2. Get blue water barrel, get katadyn filter such as this (for large volume) http://www.katadyn.com/en/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-wasserfilter-endurance-series-produkte/katadyn-expedition/ or something smaller that works just as good but puts out way less volume: http://www.katadyn.com/en/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-wasserfilter-endurance-series-produkte/katadyn-pocket/

Either way you wont be using the water you filtered to wash the quad or such-only to cook and drink.

Depending on the quality of the water in the river I don’t think a Britta filter would make river water palatable to drink and it would be a waste of a good filter. You can simply buy bottled water for drinking and you could make your own filter with a 55 gallon plastic barrel for just washing up. Check with a survivalist forum and see how they make a filter.
It goes something like this but I can’t remember exactly what order the layers should be but here’s an example. Put an inlet at the top and an outlet at the bottom so you can pump water through it. Then put a layer of cotton in the bottom about 6-8” thick. Then put a layer of charcoal on top about a foot thick. Then a layer of clean white sand and another layer of charcoal until it’s full. Use a layer of hardware cloth in between each layer. You can get the cloth in the gardening section at the hardware store. The kind you put down to keep the grass down before you put the mulch down. It’s porous and will let the water through but keep the layers separated.

You’ll need the kind of barrel that has a lid that you can seal.

You’ll have to pump water through it for awhile before it clears up but it does work.
