i have a 2003 400ex and it was ticking really loud so i checked my valves and the lock nut on the valve adjuster was gone so i took the top layer of my head off to find that the nut was not in there and the only place it could of gone is down my timing chain hole. i dont want to split my cases and want that nut out bad so i can ride again but i need help on how to find it. i was wondering if i can reach the bottom of the timing chain by taking the clutch out and reaching it from behind there?

the only case side that has to come off is the clutch side. it just unbolts, the whole case set doesnt have to come off. a new gasket is needed but thats about all.

you could try with a magnet if you have a long one but the chances of snagging it are quite slim. you could go down through the chain hole though.

i have a book on in the mail thats going to help me i just bought the wheeler and was in like 10 peices. my cousin gave me the idea of taking the rest of the head off so i could move the chain out of the way but would it just be easier to take clutch off? i also heard the fly wheel is magnetic? can i reach that from clutch side?

Take the clutch cover off. That would be the easies way. There is a screen at the bottom. Check that. Stand the bike up on the back wheels and it should fall to the back of the motor and then use a magnet To grab it. Best of luck.

Found the nut and Put it all back together and she's running good. It was on top of clutch gear and timing chain gear. I was 1/8th of an inch away from even more trouble. Thanks for the help guys.
