I have the chance to trade my stock and mint 02 400ex for a clean mainly stock 88 250r. I ride trails and sand pits and I ride all winter. Would this be a stupid trade for me due to the age of the 250r???

Its going to be a totally different machine, where the EX has alot of lowend power the 250r will want to scream all day long in the higher rpm range. I wouldnt trade until you get a chance to ride something similar for a bit to see if you like it.

If its in good condition and doesn't need anything major I would do it. Will he let you ride it first and do you know the history of the r any?

I have been told the history but nothing documented. Same old story "put her in the shed for 10 yrs."
CJM I have been riding for about 15yrs now. Never had a 250r but I did have built blaster and a kx 125 and had many hours logged on to my buddys built zilla. I like my ex but I want a machine that is going to make me hold on for dear life.

a mostly stock r will pull a stock 400 a bit but with a pipe and filter the r will be quite a bit faster and give you that hold on tight or it will leave you there factor.

im not sure i would trade an ex for an r but it is a great second machine for me. i do alot of slower pace tight technical riding so the r is limited there compared to the ex.

if you ride alot of fields and are running 1/2 or more 80% of the time or more the r will be a blast for you and will keep you happy. if you like the pull on a kx125 you will enjoy it.

i say trade it and hold on tight. just dont smash it up, parts are becoming harder to come by, stock ones at least. theres great aftermarket support by companies like roll, esr, and a few others. definitely think about investing in those that keep the r alive.

the 250 in stock form isnt any faster the the 400ex with a small amount of work,
but put a ct 310 or an esr 330 and an airstriker 38mm carb and a good port job not the stock #7 esr hand port, and a trx5 centermount pipe, and it will give any 450 a run

the air striker carb is a great woods and all around carb, but if your just riding woods the dont go 38mm just go smaller so you keep the low end and have porting and pipe matched for your needs

or go a power valve and adjust for what you want,

x2 esr has some wicked packages that will eat up 450s. though the 400 can be made to do that too.

Well if its not much faster than my ex it might not be worth it to me. With my ex I always find myself looking for 6th gear. I have been looking at the ds 650 and raptor 660. Iam looking for a machine with scary power in stock form. I dont care to much to mod my quad because for me its a time,$$$ and a reliability thing. Although you guys do some crazy mods that are very cool.

id trade in a minute the 250r is faster with a pipe and filter it will keep up with a 450 but like they said it wants to go fast all the time lol

If you do dunes alot i would go with a 250r. But just trail riding and such a 400ex is the way to go. 400's pull just as hard. But 250r's have crazy top end. Two strokes are nice. But in my opinion. Stay with a 4 stroke. Depends on what you like. If you like the kx125's pull more than the 400's go ahead. Lol

the thing about the 250 is its like a classic car, every place you take it people will stop and ask about it,

a 250 turns into a life style hobby, if you get one you will be hooked, and no other quad will measure up,even if its stock

its definitely an addiction in itself.

if keeping machines stock is your forte get a 450 or 700 4 stroke. they rev fast and pull hard in stock form. the r is great but to really make it scream like a new girl friend it needs a pipe and filter at the minimums. a pipe and filter will get you well over 70 mph.

when did you guys go, I was there last week,

was there all the dirt piles in that pit in one of your pics when you went?

we had to knock down a pile of loam to get through to the other side of the pit , it was knock down the loam or go through the beaver puddle at the end of road, we chose the loam... lol

were there still the 2 stolen bicycle there?

but if you wanted to get to the other pit and trails like your going to the figure 8 track,

you have to go through about 3 1/2 feet of water that's at the end of the road near the bowl gate or over a bunch of piles of loam in the bowl pit

No ****... I got to meet the owner of that sand bowl, he was riding too. The water crossing can be a pia. Next time I go out Iam going to build up the jump in the figrue 8 track. My buddy with a rzr was getting 45' off that jump. That area is my stomping ground, direct access.

i would jump all over the 250r. Personally its my favorite quad but i just cant seem to get my hands on one. They seem to be very rare around me. One came up on craigslist about 2 months ago right after my wife lost her job so i had no extra money to get it. Someday tho...

I love two strokes but sometimes wish I still had my ex. Just because you filled it up and went. Always started. Just push a button. However I would trade in a heartbeat. I still perfer 2 strokes.
