250r wont shift at all

Hey 250r croud I was working on my 250r tonight, trying to get the clutch arm in. When I randomly decided to shift the motor. When I realized i can push down the shifter arm all the way till it hits the frame and come back up and I can pull it up quite far. The gears wont even click. It doesnt bind or nothing just freely moves. Any ideas? I am assuming I am missing a bunch of parts regarding the shifting mechanizm. Oh great...Please dont bash me as I am 16 and still learning. this may be a simple fix but i doubt it. I also dont know how a professional motocross shop could miss something like this?

pull the right side cover, and check the shifting spindle and the gear plate and ratchet pawl,

more then likely you will find the problem with one of these items
