I am looking at picking up a stock 450r for cheap. I have heard of the crank bearing failures and was wondering if there is a mod or if it requires a new crank.

On the 04/05's, original stock crank, the main culprit is, the thrust washers on the big end of the rod. Crank and main bearings will need replaced. The later models, didn't seem to have this issue.

04/05 have issues in races breaking of the rt. side crank bearing. cranks have been updated from honda in 05. crank comes with new bearing, race, different seal with an inner race for seal

i have heard that some of the later 05's came with an updated crank. is this true?
if so, how do i tell from the VIN if mine is a newer model 05 which came with the updated crank from factory?

Thanks
Josh

yes, crank is updated. these cranks didnt come out till after production engines were built. If engine has never been disassembled, old crank is in. Only way to check if not knowing if crank has been replaced is, remove rt. case remove crank bolt, remove the 2 gears on shaft. If you see the crank seal having a inner race on crank, its updated.
