my 400 Build thread.

so a few months ago i got this 2001 400ex for basically nothing.

heres what it looked like when i got it:

i traded 150 bucks and a 351W and tranny that i got for free for it. came with everythin, the only catch was it came in boxes lol.

the first thing i did was get it running:

during this pic it ran but it smoked oil real bad. like alot lol. so i tore it back down and did the valve seals and cleaned the carbon off the head and sent the cylinder out to be bored .040 over. its still gone and won be in for a few more days, along with OEM rocker arms and top end gaskets.

started painting my front end:

and today i got bored so i started stripping the frame for a repaint:

all the mods are: gusseted frame, Stage 3 cam, P&P head, .040 over. full LRD exhaust, UM airbox, No Lid, K&N filter, kenda knarlys rear, Holeshots on the front, ITP rims all the way around, Cannondale Cannibal 440 A-Arms, reworked rear shock, IMS pegs, AC nerfs and skids, Maier plastic, Moose bars, powermadd handguards, +2 Axle, 13/38 sprockets, LSR carrier and anti fade locknut, LSR sprocket hub, LSR parking brake block off.

so what do yall think so far?

to bad paint wont hold up well, you should powder coat things. my only suggestion would be to get some bars that arent so ugly. like fat bars. and +2's

i have always painted my frames and they have always held up, its all in the prep work. i use real automotive primer/paint/ and clear that i spray on with a real gun, no rattle can job here lol.

new bars are on the list, along with a houser stem, stainless brake lines, new balljoints, tie rod ends, and a few other things.

Did my 400 frame in automotive paint like he was talking about and never had a problem.

Just got to sand it well, and be generous with the clear coat lol.

almost done sandblasting the frame, what a pain in the arse!! still gotta do the subframe, swingarm, stock steering stem, A-arms, hubs, and axle.

so i got it all sandblasted and primed up tonight. one thing i noticed though, there is no VIN number on it. it doesnt look like its been grinded off or anything. just nice clean unmolested metal where it should be.

ITS ALMOST DONE!!!

i got the motor done awhile ago and ran into some extra cash so i decied to get it powdercoated.

the frame and top A-arms are Flourescent orange and the bottom a arms and swingarm are chrome. eveything else will be black. now i just fotta order balljoints, bushings and swingarm bearings and it will be done. anyways, enough talk. on to the pics!

lol. its gotta come back apart anyways. the swingarm needs new bearings. its there just so i could see what the color combo looked like.

i really like these graphics but there pretty well wore out. theyre dull, but when i buff out my plastics maybe the graphics will clean up too. if that works than ill be happy and wont have to spend as much money lol.

thanks, lets try this again!

got some updates, finally. its been too long.

got my wiring cut down to the aboslute bare necessities, wired in a pro armor kill switch and a starter button hidden somewhere on the frame.
didnt take any pics of that stuff yet, but i did manage to paint my plastics and save my K&K graphics!

i sanded it all down with fine sandpaper, primered it, painted it and cleared it. i want to wet sand it and do another coat of clear then buff it out, its shiny but could be better. and for bonus effect i left the underside black, should give a nice 2 tone effect, especially on the fronts where the fenders come up.

for the graphics, i carefully took them offf with a heat gun and but them on a big piece of plastic sheeting, buffed all the gouges out, bleach white(ed)(sp?) as much discoloration out of the lettering and flames as i could an sprayed about 4 coats of clear on it.

some may ask why re-use old graphics, well, why not? lol. it turned out great IMO.

thanks! i hope it turns out good. waitin to get a feww more parts to button it up.

air shrouds, balljoints, bumper and some shock covers to hide the hideous stockers til i can scrape up enough to get some nice axis or PEPs. i really want to put a Quad tech 450R hood on it, thats not a high priority though at the moment. and i got some more parts to clean up before it gets finished.

still need a few things before shes done.....450R throttle cable, intake manifold that bolts to the head, battery, new hardware for the a arms since all the bolts are temporary mix-n-matches just so i could roll her around. got some 450R shocks headed my way too.

im pumped to finally ride this thing soon.
