On my 2000 400ex, the rear caliper bangs around. you can wiggle the caliper up and down with your hand. it has about an inch of play.
All my bolts are tight!

:(
Is there something that wears out?
The part that is loose is where the caliper mount meets the swing arm....
the play occurs where parts 3 and 4 meet in the green circled i marked here:

There is a bushing #4 in the diagram. It may be missing or worn out, and the slot in the break stay may be worn as well. Even in new condition it will have a very small amount of play in it. it’s normal, but an inch is way too much play.

the bushing is there, (pretty sure) but it bangs around alot.

also, i know its not a rear bearing, because i took the caliper off and the sound goes away.....

i had the same problem, only about a quarter inch though i put i wrap of electrical tape around my carrier and that solved most of the wigling....

you put tape around the #3 part?

like, around the hole where the #4 bushing goes in?

tape works the quickest and does ok but the next best thing to buying new parts is to have it brazed and build the material up. be like $20 for a machine shop to do.

i put tape around the part of the carrier that the #3 part sits around... (thats were mine had play)my carrier is trashed so im just chalking it up to it being a 2001 and has seen a bit of use....but yeah the whole new #3 piece could be your best bet

electrical tape has soooo many uses on an atv lol. they work perfect for a arm and shock bushings too. it takes the rattle and squeak out of it.

so, i put some electrical tape around the bushing (#4) and its snug and quiet now!

Thanks for all the help!

I had the same problem too. part #3 was loose so I put some quick steel in it and filed it down to fit snug then I put a thin rubber o ring behind the caliper mount bracket then installed the snap ring works great and doesn't rattle around at all and can still adjust the chain fine.
