the short answer is it generally involves someone using a dirt-bike motor in a ATV chassis. There are specially made chassis out there that are designed to fit yz and crf motors. Such chassis can be found from various manufactures including: walsh, JB, arens, Laeger, lonestar, and many more. Some still make these frames while others no longer do.

putting any motor other than oem in a chassis mostly the 250r chassis had crf motors yz motors and ktm motors originally back in 98 was the first ones with yz400 wich made them popular but people were doing cr 500 motors and all kinds long before just never raced motocross with them

putting the 350x motor in the 250r probably is the most popular hybrid up until ~03. Yes, many did the cr500, few kept it from what I understand. After 98 the yz400-426 motor was used, ~02 crf450r motor and yz450f were mostly done. The 350x motor was so popular because you could buy a 350x for little money(another issue about people thinking 3 wheelers are illegal and dangerous.......BS) and they could be gotten NOS take-outs as how many of the 350x and 85/86 atc250r motor were gotten.
The popular hybrid for the 3 wheeler guys are trx450r, crf450r and yz450f. There are others that take the dirtbike frame and modify it to accept trx/yfz parts, combined w/ a custom triple and inverted forks(shortened). Another one that is very logical is getting a trx450r, and converting it to a trike using moslty all modern dirtbike and atv parts, TPC does this for a very reasonable cost. He races what he sells also. I am having a atc450r built, one-off frame, using mostly current parts and very few trx/atc250r parts.
