Well I wouldn't call them the BEST, but they are an attractive option to someone who is starting out into the sport. Easy ridability and loads of TQ at low RPM's.

@ridehonda400ex - I agree, I'd be happy with just the rear fenders on my 1 Gen. The fronts dont really bother me, But I wish the rear fenders looked more aggressive.

wats wrong with the new look, i think they look good, i wish they weren't 2 tone plastic though, so i could race cut em but o well they still look good, i dont really need to race cut em anyway, its just more of a chance to get yourself more dirty haha....... i cant avoid not getting dirty every time i ride anyway haha

I prefer the 99-04, the 08+ imho is good too. Not to fond of the 05-07.

me either i dont like the headlight lookin like that, if they ever changed the plastics i would want the plastics lookin like the 450r plastic, so u could race cut em and still have that sharp look to it

I wouldnt cut your fenders unless you're racing MX or playing at the dunes.. you'd be surprised how much more water gets thrown at you from the tires without fron fenders..

You're 08 looks good, I vote leave the plastics the way they are ;)

I dont like the 1-2 generation full fronts, to round IMO.. but everybody likes their own things..

I didn't like either one when I first saw them updated from the Gen 1 plastics.

Now both have grown on me and I now like all 3 styles.

The 08 looks a lot better without the headlight though... and in solid color, or with graphics. Now 2 solid colors would be easy to come up with by two people swapping pieces at no cost... as the 2012 is opposite 2-tone red and black.

I would like to see them integrate the 450R style tank though. That would be a really slick looking addition to the 08+ styling... and not having to pull the plastics to pull the tank would be a plus.

go to IMS or CLARKE?

IMS has a huge nut crushing hump at the fill neck on the tank. You want to be sterile thats the tank you want.

Sadly clarke tanks for the EX leak around the mounting bolts.

So sadly there is zilch.

How is the EX tank not big enough? With all my mods I can run for an entire day (such as today 12-8:30) running around all over and finally hit reserve at like 8pm. XC race isnt more than 8 hours is it?

no its like a hour to 2 hours, but i hunt with it then ride country roads then spend the night, then do it again the next day without filling it up, IMS and Clarke only make gas tanks for 99'-07' and i have a 08'

6 pack rack and a small 1 gallon gas tank my friend.

Or do what my buddies who have 2 strokes: Bring a can and hide it somewhere you can come back to.

It is a different world on a race track in an XC race.

I'm amazed how much more fuel you can burn... well waste to an extent really...

I don't burn near the fuel when trail riding... because everything I do is nice and effient... and then I chill out when I get tired.

A race is different... you are pushing and pushing... and keep on pushing... trying to wring every last bit out of every move you make....... and then you get tired and start to get all unsmooth and unefficient, loosing momentum and stuff you would normally carry in preparation for the next situation, etc...

It really sucks the gas so much more than just a hard trail ride that you wouldn't believe.

After riding a 450 for a few years now, I can really make my 400EX suck the fuel just trail riding now because I'm reaching deep in the throttle a lot more and longer.

Trust me, I basically ride hard out XC type stuff all day. If I really beat it I can kill the tank in 6 hours. This is running almost wide open throttle Id say 80% of the time. Im not saying your wrong, but if your jetted spot on then it should last a good bit.

Good example: Rode yesterday like I said, did jumps, fast trail riding, very fast pinned 4th and 5th gear on sand roads, flew from one end of the pit to the other multiple times (were talking a good 5 miles if not more).

Maybe Im just lucky and have a larger tank IDK about lol.

Me too, but the track is different.

I can burn more now in my EX on a hard trail ride than I do in my 450 in a 2 hour race... and it seems the more power I add the less fuel I burn in the 450. Some of my team mates run the same 450 with better momentum and have to pit because they are always reaching deeper to get to the power.

Anyways, go out for an XC race and run a good solid 2 hours or more. I bet you will be surprised at the fuel you burn trying to keep up, make progress and finally get to the end after you're all worn out. When I end up beat early is when I eat the most fuel, just because I am too tired to be a good rider and use the peak tactics to get through places... makes the old motor have to work harder to get through.
