Ok so ive been debating on which pipe to get ive been wanting a Curtis Sparks X-6 Exhaust but i want to know which is better, ive been looking at the Motoworks and HMF to, which one is the best of the three?, im gonna get one of these systems, people have told me to get the LEXX slip-on but i dont want it my friend has one and i dont like it, one of my other friends has a Yoshimura pipe and its alright but i wouldnt want one, so help me out people im gonna get one before the weekend

For the most part it seems that the slip ons are so close to each other in performance gains that it comes down to brand preference and what one you like the looks of etc. A good slip on, open the air box aup and a rejet will give you a little ooomph in your step, but not huge. The sparks seems to be the best exhaust period for a 400ex, but are on the loud side. Not sure if a quiet core is available or if there is how much they reduce the db output. Noise is always something to take into effect, the quieter the better, we need to keep our riding areas open.

I've read alot on this topic, and from everything I've gathered slip ons are the way to, beacuse the stock header flows well, and there is little to no gains by getting a different header on a stock engine. But I'm a little confused by this because the Sparks is suppose to be the best and its a fullsystem, not a slip on. Can any of the resident pro's clarify why a Sparks full system is better than a slip on, if theres minimal performance to be had in aftermarket header?

I hear the sparks is the best to, but i think the sparks headers are bigger in diameter than the stock header so it flows better, the Sparks Big Core is even bigger than that i think, there is a quiet core to put on but i wanna no how much quieter it is with it on anybody know?

Im leanin towards the Sparks Pipe right now

Depends on how much coin you want to spend.

Sparks for sure very nice and Im sure has a good power gain-but for the price its not that great. Plus in order for you to really take advantage you need the corresponding engine, open airbox and such. Everything has to work together to create the power.

The stock EX headers arent that bad and many would agree with me. I much prefer for cost a slip on. using my EX as an example a slip on is nothing more than a straight thru designed pretty much anyways. I run a Lexx slip on and for the price (think it cost me like 250 way back when) its been great. Plenty loud with core removed, quiet with it in. Did I noticed a power gain with it-yea but the engine work and air box lid removal gave me the most power imho. Would I benefit from a full exhaust, not sure never tried but I doubt it would make more than maybe 1-2hp and if thats even felt at the wheels Id be amazed.

Imho Id spend the coin on a motoworks, lexx or hmf slip on over a sparks full exhaust. You can always sell it later and upgrade if you want. That or find a used sparks for a good deal.

In the end, if you want power to come close to a 450R you need to upgrade everything. Its costly for sure, but a new 450R is even more money. Before when I just had the slip on it was quick, after that it puts anything besides other 450s to shame.

yeah i bought a new K&N filter, outerwears, and DynoJet kit all in one deal from Ebay for $100, and im gonna get a 42 Pilot Jet from Honda tommorow, why i was wanting a sparks so bad was i know this guy that ordered a full system and he decided he didnt want it so he got a different exhaust so he has a brand new full sparks exhaust for sale, and he said he'll sell it to me for $200 so should i get it or not, i think its a good deal

i am not going to lie but hmf is probably my favorite exhaust manufacture, because they make there pipes loud and they sound good. but sparks probley gives you the best performance outta any of them. but i have been saying i may get a hmf slip on but probley not now. i am going to get a friends full lrd pipe for like 200 bucks and give him my stock pipe. if thats not deal then i dont know what deal means.

What kind of riding do you do? I have had just about all of them and can say that the only difference is how loud some of them are.. on a dyno one may be better than the other. I never felt a difference ..

motoworks is probably gonna be your new and cheapest full system. I would imagine they would sound good cause they sound damn good on a cam am ds450. Plus i like the look of thoes motoworks too. But Any other will work to. Just depends alot on how much you would wannna spend.

For that price Id buy it too.

BC: Throw out the dynojet kit and buy keihin jets, it will run much better. I too ran DJ and when I switched what a difference it was amazing how much better it ran.

Just an fyi about the lexx, might not be everyones cup of tea but its works well is made extremely nice vs alot of other stuff out there and has tunable tips you can change out super easy.

But I wouldnt turn down a sparks pipe for the price hes paying either

I will stand behind my HMF kit. I have seen other high end kits rust up, fall apart after a few seasons.. My HMF is still in stellar shape.. even the sparks, while it mite make a tad more power, it will not last IMO as long as the HMF kit will. My buddy has had to replace packing a few times in his sparks pipe, a few rivets have came loose.. And this is not a kit I just said well hey everybody has them so let me jump on the wagon. I did my research, they seem to have one of the best track records out there..

Who HMF or Sparks, HMF was my second choice but for paying $200 for a $560 pipe i couldnt pass that up, and this is brand new, how long can u ride before u have to repack a pipe?

CJM
07-07-2011, 05:31 PM
HMF I think he means.

Usually gotta repack at 50-75 hours. Depends on how it was ran, who rode it, how it was rode kinda thing.

You could buy the packing from sparks or whomever, I use fiberglass insulation from home depot for a fraction of th cost-never had an issue either.

07-07-2011, 05:38 PM
Yah CJM, HMF I am talking about.. I mean the sparks kit is a nice kit, I am not bashing it, but for the prices on them vs HMF, I think there could be more desired as far as build quality...

John

07-07-2011, 05:39 PM
haha if i works thats what i'll probably do, wat does the packing do cause the stock pipes dont have packing?

B.C.#11TRX400EX
07-07-2011, 05:45 PM
yeah the HMF systems are alot cheaper but people told me sparks was one of the best but one of the most expensive, so i looked around and my friend told me he would sell me his new system for $200 so i jumped all over it, but i would have got a HMF system if he wouldnt of sold it to me that cheap

Thumpin440ex
07-07-2011, 05:58 PM
Your friend must have stole the sparks kit if he sold it to you that cheap.. LOL Unless it is just a slip on

its to keep the core tight so it dosent sound hollow like a stock pipe with no baffle and to quite them down a little
