What is the clear plastic piece that goes out of my airbox and around the carb?

Thats the air intake aka snorkel.

it pretty much lets in more air to the airbox, i think

Unless you remove the lid to the airbox air really wont get in to well besides the small hole.

Leave it alone, it doesnt make any power difference what so ever. Best of all if you remove it and get near any water your gonna suck it right into the airbox.

yeah CJM is right all the lid does is prevent dirt and water from getting in the engine, if u take it off all it does is make it a little louder and lets more dirt and other stuff go on the filter

I removed it and plugged it with a rattle can cover.

Cool, if u take the whole thing off more heat goes to the gas tank, so it also acts as a heat shield for the tank
