cdi box questions

Ive got an 87 250r and im trying to sort out some electrical issues and was going to try a different cdi box. I have already got a different coil and stator and it didnt help so I need to check the box next. will any year model cdi box work? or are they seperate like 86-87 and 88-89?

but im not sure if that makes any difference, if so its easy enough to swap the wires at the ipg connector, the 87-89 are all identical
