I'm working on my nephew's 2001 300ex. I'm trying to tighten the chain and have got the pinch bolts loose. The chain adjuster will rotate all the way back until the notches are pointed down so I am sure it is as tight as it will go and there is still too much slack (about 2x as much as there should be). I took a link out and adjusted it as far forward as I could (the notches are a little forward of straight up) and the chain is too short. It has a 13 tooth front and 38 tooth rear sprocket. The chain was a 86 link but I have removed 1. Anyone have some ideas?? Trying to get it running for the 4th.

Thanks in advance!!

Can you use a half link? But If the chain is that stretched, where it's at the end of the adjustment, it may be best to get a new chain.

The quad was just purchased and he said he replaced the chain. The chain looks in good condition. I wonder if he bought a 530 or 540 instead of 520? How can I measure to find out?

Thanks

It should be stamped on the side of the link's 520,530,540.

I got to a shop today and got my hands on a half link. I need to replace the chain and sprockets, but this will work and get me through the 4th. Thanks for the help.

13/38 requires an 86 link chain don't see why your having trouble.
