Riding my mountain bike yesterday, while trying to work my way out of a rut on a downhill,I got chucked off my bike and landed rite on my shoulder,OUCH...ER visit and x-rays proved a separated shoulder. They hit me with some morphine and gave me a splint and sent me home.I always thought a sparation could be popped back into place???Not this type.My next step is to see a specialist and get an MRI...This seems to be a common injury so I would like to get some feedback on what to expect for recovery, how long I might be sidelined from riding, working out at the gym etc...THIS SUX...

I separated my shoulder my senior year in football. I only missed one game so it wasn't too bad but it really was annoying. It was like an annoying pain. I had to go to a specialist and they gave me some electro-therapy on my muscles. Fixed me up real quick

I did it in HS football as well. Still does not feel right and hurts after over activity. Just make sure you address it now and take the proper steps to heal unlike my dumbass. Good luck man.

X3 I seperated my mine, my senior year in FB. Pretty severely. I just recently had 2 different surgerys on my shoulder mostly from aggrevating it from lifting heavy. Mines bothered me for 15 years and I still have problems with it. I've got arthritis that has set in from the initial trauma back in highschool. Chick's dig scars!! haha.. Depends on the severity of the speration, but you could be back into the swing of things in a couple weeks... throwing a football overhead will take longer most likely.

Add another to the shoulder separation list, but I did mine on my yz426 back in highschool... 8 years ago. Anyway It all depends on what degree of separation you have... I think they rate them 1-5. Fortunate for me I have the shady Gray zone #3 where they said surgery was up to me but I may get arthritis later in life.

As for being popped back in, I thought the same thing, but that's a dislocation. A dislocation pulls the shoulder out of socket, while a separation pushes it hard into the socket causing it to rip tendons and ligaments leaving it out of place.

What you have to look forward to:
Expect a recovery of about 4-5 weeks to where you are beginning to get comfortable with it again doing light stuff. It will come back more and more in time.
One thing my orthopedist had me do was walk my hand up a wall so you get the full range of motion back.
Other than that its just a waiting game unless its bad enough to need surgery, but I didnt get that because of hearing of so many botched shoulder surgeries I figured I'd roll my dice until it was bad if it should need it.

Now down the road, I can throw a baseball again and that fun stuff... but to a much more limited extent. If I toss the ball easily its ok, but if I begin to throw hard, it wears my shoulder out to where it begins to hurt and I need to stop. Other than that I get the occasional knot in it and that good stuff, but it really does not hold me back unless I think about it... I just keep in mind that it is weaker than the other side.

Just don't push it during initial recovery, the damage is already done. Take it easy and worry about getting your range of motion back and then once it feels relatively normal then you can build upon it.

I seperated mine senior year football too was out for 2 weeks and even then it hurt to lift above my head. 6 years later and it pops pretty loud when throwing a ball or doing pushups or bench press. Somtimes gets lil sore if I sleep on it wrong or strain from lifting. Hard. It sucks but not a prob most the time

I dislocated my shoulder at work in 2007. First MRI didn't show any damage and I went to PT for 3 months, with no improvement. I still had instability and it always felt like it wanted to pop out of joint. My orthopeditc Dr then sent me for an MRI w/contrast and it showed the labrum was torn. I had open surgery and had 3 titanium screws placed in there. Not a fun surgery or rehab. I was out of work for a year. Now that it's fully healed I can say it's stronger than my other shoulder and I only lost about 15% range of motion, which I can live with. Hopefully your shoulder isn't as bad as mine was and you have a speedy recovery bro.

I did mine on my 86 trx250r. In turn 1 on a big TT I was happy that that is all that I had to go through. No surgery for me and the recovery was slow. For 2 months it was painfull to even race TT. I still can't throw but around 85 to 90% of before. Take it easy and let it heel.

shoulders take forever to heal. you are getting good advice, make sure you keep working your range of motion. flexx bars or something like them will let you ride sooner without irritating it as much, they helped out more then I imagined they would, your shoulders take a huge beating when you ride, you don't realize it till one is hurt.

Shoulders suck!

Dislocated my shoulder playing baseball in College. Tore my Labrum. Opened up the shoulder and installed anchors. 2 months of therapy leading up to surgery, approx. 8 months post-op (3x's/week).

2 years later hit a pick-up truck head-on on a snowmobile. Of course, left shoulder took brunt of impact. Broke my coracoid process and tore out all anchors. Bankart repair and capsular shift performed AGAIN!

Still isn't the same 9 yrs later. Limited range of motion and still do therapy exercises 2'xs a week to keep it strong and stable. Best of luck to you!

Mine was Bankhart repair and capsular shift also. Rehabbing it sucked. I can't imagine doing it TWICE.

It wont be pain free in 3 months to ride... it will still feel funny. You will be able to ride but it will feel like it tires out. Just take it easy and do what the ortho says so you can have a good recovery.

Man, wouldn't it be cool to have one gigantic get-together. A huge 250r ride?

Well forget it! I ain't riding with any of you people, you all are accident-prone! Cripes, I've never seen so many injuries in one place in my life!

Is there anybody in this section that HASN'T had a dislocated shoulder?

Yes thanks,Santa Cruz Nomad...6.5in. All mountain setup. It does suck but I'm recovering well and so bored that I'm spending too much on this bike and the R...Currently changing from air shock and fork to the new Fox coil stuff.I equally miss the R and the bike!

I seperated my shoulder (level 4) in '99 in HS football. Seeing as how you are pretty athletic. you should heal fairly quickly. but The best way I have learned to heal quickly is to heal correctly. many people have touched base on some important things. Use ice and heat regularly, then start with small articulations of motion gradually increasing until your range of motion is to its fullest. After you are comfortable with the full motion and can do so continually then you can slowly start adding weight to regain your shoulder strength. Take your strength training slow. AND THE BEST AID IN INJURY RECOVERY IS A PROPPER DIET. A high protien diet, as you probably already know, will help your body build muscle faster than diets with high fat content or high carbs. In periods of recovery it helps to eat 1.5 to 2x your body weight in grams of protien. plenty of water will help flush out your system better than anything else. Chicken, Fish, pork, lean beef, Deer, Elk, buffalo, beans, egg whites, are all great sources of lean protien. A good protienshake is a great supplement but whey protien is probably the best add fruit to them to make them taste better. MIlk is ok to use and makes them taste better. 6 small meals a day helps keep your body's metabolism stay up to speed as well as keeps your apitite under control. planning your meals in advance is a great way to do this.

I always think of my diet as the type of fuel I am feeding my body. I want to have a high performance body, and I have never heard of running ****ty fuel in a high performance quad so why even try and run waste vegetable oil as fuel when you can have 114 octane for the same price.

I know you probably alread yknow this but others may not.

Thats some great advice profab! I am still taking my workout supps. like creatine/glutamine mix with protein and a pre-workout powder.Im in the gym obviously doing only lower body and cardio.Im in the jacuzzi some times twice a day, thats when I really get to work on my range of motion due to the heat and the weightlesness...My BIGGEST fault in this is my lack of patience!I already find myself testing my shoulder and accidentally using my right arm to lift my body etc...My diet kinda sucks too,I eat absolutely EVERYTHING!!! It will be 2 weeks Sat...

I need to get back to eating the right foods my self. You know the feeling when you work out and afterwards you feel great especially after you have been hitting the gym for a while. Well when you switch your diet to a truely healthy, lean, high protien diet. your body feels 10 times better than that even.

My biggest pit fall to eating health is my addiction to Dr. Pepper.
