they all have good qualities and bad, its all in what you like.I like the 06.07, but I dont mind the 04 05, all good!!if your going to modify with a crf head then get a +06

if you plan on porting then get a +06 and use a 06 crf head and get that ported for serious power! use a 02 crf cam and high compression piston and crf head gasket

if you use a engine building like rage ( as u said you wanted to) I would go with the 06+ motor becuase they can harden and backcut the tranny for you and the head puts out more power

I'm partial to the 04/05 motors, for my own selfish reasons. I wouldn't turn down an 06+ kicker only though.

There all great bikes,i have 06 with the kicker and simplified wiring harness, and an 05 front end and i love it. but if you get an 05 you can save youself alot of money because you wont have to do any of what i did haha. also you can run CRF ignitions in the 05's. and i believe the tranny's are a bit stronger as well. But don't think your getting any lesser of a bike really with an 06+.
