I know this has been beat to death on here , but im looking for a slip on pipe for my 04 400ex. I want a pipe for bottom and mid end power and maybe a little gain on top , but i dont want all my power in top end. i like the looks of the big gun r best , other pipe im looking at are hmf (competion or sport) , and lexx. I was going to dot he UNI filter also . Ive heard the hmf makes the best low end power , how about the lexx and big gun ?

I think most of the slip-on exhausts are going to perform about the same, mainly whats different is the looks and sound/decible level. so id probably go by which ever exhaust looks the best to you. im pretty happy with my hmf...heres a pic of mine, but its not a good closeup

all SLIP ON exhausts are bottom end, the header pipe is what gives you the top end, the FMF, HMF, and Curtis Sparks are all in the same area in the power range for the 400ex, i have had a CS, and HMF and the HMF made a better sound but the CS was nice because it wasnt loud all the time, aftermarket exhausts are are great but everyone says, you cant beat the FMF with a POWERBOMB header infront of it. i have no clue about big guns, i have heard good and bad about them but i think they are all overrated and overpriced.

I have a lexx slip on, it works quite well for the price after I made it slip on the way I want (the stupid collar they send you is junk!). With spark arrestor in it ran ok, with it gone its got tons of power all around. The EX header itself isnt bad at all, its not very restrictive as many think. Just grind away the welds a bit at the mounting flange by the head.

I am running a White Bros E series slip on with an FMF powerbomb header and it is the best combo I have found. That said, the E series is no longer available. I would suggest an HMF, Pro Circuit, FMF, Yoshimura, Motoworks, Supertrapp, and a few others I am forgetting.

I would not recommend a Big Gun, older DG, or Dubach (was great just fell apart).

I have never seen a Big Gun exhaust last more than a few seasons without falling to pieces. Also, I don't think they make much more power than the stock exhaust. (Full system)

The older DG's are junk.

Dubach exhausts seem well made and make good power but also fall apart rather quickly.

I would look into a tunable exhaust.

Also, don't expect it to be a beast after a slip-on, it may be a quad length faster in a 300ft drag but that is about all you are going to get.

You would honestly be better off with the stock exhaust, an air filter and an 04-05 450R carb or a Sparks timing key.

thanks for the help, I have it narrowed down to a HMF or lexx , does the lexx put out a good sound or is it like stock ? I hate the sound im getting with the stock pipe now . I can get a used HMF off a 08 on craigslist for $150 , i think i may go that route.

For power, I think it opened it up a little, especially lowend and mid.....it's not too loud to me, not sure on decibel level though.

The Motoworks is such a great pipe.. I will never run anything else. HMF is very comparable to it. THe motoworks have great low and mid power.. add a header and it gives all around power.. I think the DB is around 100.. Which is loud but not too loud to piss people off(:

I am still confused why everyone forgets about Motoworks... They have the best exhaust IMO, and it sounds way better than all the rest..
