Hey guys,
I want to get your all's opinion on this trade I'm being offered before I pull the trigger. It 'looks' decent, but looks can be deceiving.

So, I have a slightly build 440ex. Mods are in my sig. I'll post a few pictures of it below.

The good:
*It's brand spankin' new (I just finished heat cycling it)
*It's the most powerful quad I've ever owned. I love the throttle response.
*It's very very clean and I know the full history of the quad. I take good care of my stuff.

The bad:
* imo it needs more suspension work. I'm thinking GT Thunder revalve.
*it gets very very hot, so it is going to need a SPAL fan at best and possibly the FST oil mod.
*The plastic is bringing the over-all look of the quad down. I'd like to upgrade it.

Now, this guy has an '06 450er that is 4.5 hours from me. He is willing to pay my gas if I drive up with him to trade. The 450 has a Durablue axle, Quadtech(?) hood, I-Shock +3 front end, Ext SS brakelines, Pro-peg nerfs, a LSR +2 stem, Pro Taper bars and some other small stuff. He says it has a freshly rebuilt (stock) engine with 2 hours on it. He also says it is hard to start because the valves need adjusted. He doesn't like my tires and wants to keep his.

The good:
* Very nice suspension and after market.
* Stock engine is a good building platform.

The bad:
* Quad can only be roll-started (Intake valves are too tight I bet.)
* Unknown past.
*Long drive.

Anyway, here are some pics. Let me know what you guys are thinking I should do. I'm leaning towards going to check it out. I have gotten the 450 itch really bad lately.

Mine: ( I removed those ugly nerfs and bumper.)

Sounds fishy, why would he want to trade a "better" quad for a 440? Not saying your ride isn't nice cause it is but he wants to pay for your gas and trade straight up? I dunno about that.

I totally hear you. It makes me suspicious too.

He says the 450 is too much maintenance and he just wants to play around, so he wants a 440..

I wouldn't even waste your time on it unless you are mechanically savvy and think you can come out with the better deal.

If you do go and look at it, make sure you ride crap out of it or make the seller fire it up and take it down the road or wherever from a dead stop to top speed. Check the chain tightness, bearings, shocks, just everything.

Also, I'm not a big fan of the 06+ Honda 450s. I have seen to many go down with junk bottom ends and issues with the "unicam" system (bad valves or snapped/twisted cam).

If I were in your position, I would try to sell your quad and then put that money towards a 450 of your choice.

its probably hard to start cause its worn out. How could the valves be out of adjustment so quickly with "2" hours on it.
And it might be his camera, but his plastics dont look any better than yours, so your gonna be looking to do new plastics on that too.

If I was you, I'd buy a new front fender and a cooling fan, do the gtt stuff and enjoy it for what it is.

After riding a couple friends 450's, I realized that my built 400ex is just a better all around quad for me. I do everything. I ride mx, i race harescrambles, I ride slow trails with my wife and some slower riders. It can cruise on the trails and its a blast at the track.

The guy started wanting to swap parts off the quads (tires, handlebars, etc) and I just politely told him no.

So yeah, thanks for the help lol.

Yet another 450/400 comparo. Id have traded, spent a few bucks, and had a ridiculously faster and better handling quad. I love the 400, ive ridden em ragged, but they arent, and never will be a 450. The parts to make that 450 wider made the deal.......

X2. The 450r isn't like the 400ex, it requires alot more maintanice because it's a race machine, i don't think their comparable.

I am plenty capable of doing the maintenance on the 450... I'd much rather have that type of quad. But this guy was being shady.

I'd much rather just sell my quad then buy a 450 that is more local and from a more reputable guy.

In the mean time, I'll do small, inexpensive mods to make my 400 more cosmetically appealing. :macho

For the refrence always look at the condition of their vehicles , other toys , and house for example when buying a used quad it will give you an idea of how well they take care of things, BTW - all of his stuff looked ragged out
