I am looking for a good engine builder in Ohio to build a 416 motor, preferbly in NW OH. Does anyone have a shop they would recommend.

I have heard nothing but good things about PR Racing in Toledo. If for some reason you don't go there, try Treadway Honda in Zanesville (not exactly NW Ohio though).

Thanks for the input - I gave them a call. $1000-1100 for a 416 11:1 piston, ported & polished, web cam, valve springs & seals, gaskets and machine work with them doing all the work.

PR:rolleyes: they aren't bad, but they do feed you a lot of bull. My buddy has a PR motor, and it's not going so well, he's messed up a few motors. Personally, i think PR talks like they know what they are talking about, more than they really do know. If you ask them, they would rather just make your motor like a 400 up from 398 and put a 10:1 piston in it and stuff. there methods don't match any other motor builders in the country. I went to fischer and my 416 can pull more and grab the holeshot easily over my friends PR motor.

Fischer Cycle in ashtabula OH.

Yeah I would go with Fischer's, Baldwin, or FDO.

Yeah, profab is in ohio. He had a 400 at the i-x center but there was no-one from profab to talk to. Can you guys give me the #'s for fisher and gt thunder. I am in northeast oh and these seem to be the closest to me besides hmf. Yes hmf is an engine builder you should see their street bikes they're crazy, and their xc z's look good too. Thanks

I'm not saying PR is bad, I maybe my friend just got a bad apple or, he just isn't maintaining it(which is a true possibilty with him) I go to PR too....and i buy a lot of parts from them because they are the only local race shop and they have or can get the parts. Also, pr does give you good deals on things. I go into PR and shoot the $hit with Lou a lot. he's always got about and hours worth of things to talk to you about.lol. he's a good guy.

When my friends motor did run right, it ran good. but he's had a few problems with his bike, and that kinda of scared me and shyed me away from PR and onto Fischer.

I'm sorry if what i said was missleading...i was not trying to give PR a bad name, just my opinion. Lou and jeff know what they are talking about(most of the time) and they do some AMAZING port jobs.

Sorry again.

400MXer what all did Bud do to your 400? Also how much was it? I plan on getting a TC Cam and a 416 or 425 piston, but was thinking about a Port job and Tom has way to long of a wait so Fischer's is who I was looking at. Also how much does FDO charge for Porting?

400MXer
02-22-2003, 01:03 PM
Bud, ported, polished, bored, messed with my carb. gave me hardened rockers, Sparks full race cam, 11:1 hi comp piston. and something with my vavles. it was about $1000. would have been about 150-200 less without the hardened rockers i think

Dave400ex
02-22-2003, 01:19 PM
Dang $1,000 seems like a very good price for what he did. Plus not only is the TC a drop-in, it's cheaper then the Sparks cam so I will save some money there. I would like to have it Ported/Polished and then maybe send my Carb to him for a bore or whatever he does to it. Do you know how much just the Carb and Porting was?

Yes i think its ur friend..Lou is a great guy and yes he can talk for hours..He has more years porting under his belt than any company out there..he has been porting motors for 30+ years and has teh trophies in the shop tp prove it and national wins..Check them out at http://www.prracingengines.com/ ex motor had over 100+ hours and still had the right compression when i sold..His porting is fanominal...He spends 5 hours porting 1 head and im sure LRD and whom ever does 5 in that time..i dont know about you guys but i go for craftman work and thats what Pr has

You could just tell me what ya need to tell him. Fishers is my local Honda shop. Baldwin’s is even closer (5 minuets away). And Jody Bateman (JB Racing) is like my racing dad. My dad grew up best friends with Bud. Actually Baldwin worked at his shop WAY back in the day. I suggest going with Jody though. He did my motor. I could have got a deal from all 3 of those “heavy hitters” in the quad world up there but I picked Jody because of he gets it done the quickest, and he will help you out at the races if he gets to know you. I'll post his shop # if you want it.

Hope I helped,
The Ben Gunter

Pretty close!!!! But it was actually only 8 months!!! Not really that bad considering I sent it at the beginning of race season and that Sparks is about 13 months behind right now and he even has help in his shop!

I wish TC didn't have such a big wait I would like for him to do my Motor, but I am not waiting that long. I think when the time comes for Porting or a Valve Job I will go with Fischer's or Rocky Ridge..

For Dirt Only in Johnstown is a great place to work with. If you want the HP in a 400ex this is the place to go in Ohio. It is located about 30 minutes NE of Columbus. He specializes in big bore and stoker 400ex's

Have any of you FDO guys got yours dynoed yet?? Seems to me from what I hear that they do some impressive work and I would really like to see some numbers! I was supposed to have mine dynoed yesterday, but the once in a lifetime winter weather here in TX just happened to come just in time!!!

I am still waiting on my dyno guy to get his dyno finished. Hopefully only a couple more weeks. :)

How much would FDO charge for Porting, Valve Job, and do they offer a setup that makes the stock Carb better like Sparks does?

02-25-2003, 08:33 PM
yeah, Bud, JB, Baldwin and Laz are all badass motorbuilders...
anyone of those are one the top of my list...
Give Jody a call, like he said up above he should be the quickest and probably the cheapest....

I would be game for going riding too. I live in Findlay about 25 minutes south of Bowling Green. I haven't found too many places to ride yet either. The only time I ride is when I am racing XC.
