I have a buddy running a 12 oz lightened flywheel on his mild 440. It is noticible compared to stock. I dont think i would want that with a big bore build because i need torque but a smaller and faster revving 416 would rip with something like that.

12oz is about the limit. Lightened flywheels make a very noticeable difference. I wish I would have installed one sooner, I think every 400 needs one.

I totally agree with Wheelie.

on the fly wheel subject is there a place to send my stock wheel to to have it lightened or is it a local machine shop kind of deal? i def. want to do this before i do the 416 later this year

i have never looked into lightening my flywheel before, but i am in the middle of a 416 build right now and hearing that they make a difference i want to know what they actually do to the bike when you lighten them? Im assuming it makes more of a difference then just a hp gain. somebody please enlighten me

horse power not so much, but i sure do believe it will be one snappy machine as far as throttle response goes. correct me if im wrong some one..

It doesn't affect the HP, just how quick the engine revs.

but makes it stall easier right?

I haven't had a problem with stalling at all though I don't normally put around much.

It's slightly easier to stall, after a short ride you don't even notice it.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead but the question of how to lighten the flywheel was never answered and I was wanting to do it to both my 400s. I'm in north central MO if there is someone that does it around here please pass on the any info. Thanks

Do a google search for it..I used to ahve a few links that had companys that do this.. As for the hp increase, not much if any from the millions of pages I read on it.. Some say it makes no diff others say yes it is great..

Any place that has a balance machine can do this. We've done a few in our garage on our personal CNC balancer. Balanced to tighter specs than Honda did and lightened at the same time. Did quite a few 450R flywheels. Gave up and sold the machine when we sold our race bikes though. It's really pretty easy with the right equipment.

So do you feel it makes a diff, worth while doing mod?? I mean it can not make it no easier to stall then a 450..

as an old school vet with first hand experience this mod rocks.! i rode one with 8oz off and it does make a difference.helps get into the powerband quicker for hillclimbs with short runs at them.Gonna do this to my new 400ex too.dont take too much off itll fall on its face off idle;)
