if you are talking a full system, the ones that seem to do the best are the reverse megaphone slip on, with a header that has equal lengh primary pipes. i know that sparks has a full system with both of these, i think ct racing dose also.

Aftermarket exhaust's, are the WORST "bang for your buck",
in money spent to measurable returns / gains.

A stock headpipe, with the welds ground, and a average slip-on, will handle everything up to and including a 440 @ 11:1 with a stage 2 cam.

There are many other things to do, that will give you MUCH greater returns, before forking out $500+ bucks on a full system, for a 1 to 1 1/2 hp gain.

Of course, if money is no object, and you have plenty to burn, then by all means,
Go For It.

Some people think it's really cool to say things like "I've got 5K - 6K - 7K in upgrades on my bike".

When they go to sell it, and find that they will only get $2000 for the whole thing, they are upset.

Then comes the Fun part,.....
Parting out all the high performance stuff for 25 - 30 cents on the dollar, and having to deal with all the headaches that come along with it.

and that is ONLY if you saved all your stock parts so that you can still sell the quad.

so to answer your question, you first need to determine what you want to do with it, and how far are you REALLY going to take it.

If you are going for the all out big bore stroker, then Yes, you will NEED a full aftermarket exhaust system.

(Keep in mind, 95% of us that HAVE a Full System, don't really NEED a full system).
and $500 bucks is alot to spend for only a couple of HP.

Read the shoot-out threads and articles on exhaust's.
you might be surprised.

^^^that post says it all, don't really help much I did my header welds which wasn't really even worth my time because they wasn't even that bad. And I have had two aftermarket exhaust, HMF, and BIG GUN evo r (which is on it now). But I understand wanting a new exhaust tho completely and as stated everybody well most of everybody has one so don't let people talk you out of it when if you go look in there garage and there quad has a slip on are full system with the stock bore and compression as I do. But hmf and big gun are good but to me hmf pipes have that classic look where big gun have more of the race look.

According to this, HMF says you gain more hp on the top end with a full system vs their slip on.

The Key words here are - "According To this, HMF says".......

You can belive whatever you like, but think about this,...

Who do you really think is going to be less biased....?

Would it be the company who wants to SELL THEIR PRODUCT ??????

or

The experienced techs on a dyno, who have nothing to gain from a sale,....
who work for a respected magazine,....
who DO have something to lose from giving out bad or incorrect information ?

What's that they have to lose you ask ???
Their Reputation.
(which equates to less readers of their magazine).

But for those of you who read the National Enquirer,
believe Elvis is still alive,
and the moon is made of Cheese,....

Then go ahead and pay out the Big Bucks,..... for that ONE horsepower !

Oh yeah,... I forgot,... "But is SOUNDS Cool",.... right?

for my money, I'd much rather do a properly jetted 450r carb, uni filter, (Sparks key, on anything under a 11:1 comp engine), and get 6+ HP for around $200 bucks.

add another $200 with a cam, and get 10% MORE HP.

Believe what you will, and spend your money !!!
The economy needs it !

lol speaking of hmf...

ian and i were just discussing that dyno sheet on their site and were laughing quite hard about it.

ATTN HMF:
40 hp.... come on guys if you are listening at hmf! put the slip on only please, not a full blown 400ex with your race exhaust on it, thats cheaping and misleading for people like the op here who will believe anything they read online posted by a company.

on the 40 hp note, fix your jetting specs too while you are at it.... im tired of getting people that think a 170 main will work great on their stock 400ex with a air filter and a slip on.

I would never buy an HMF just based off of the false information provided on their site. it is bluntly lying to the customer.

at least show what your stock machine ran before the addition.
my vote fmf q4 slip on. quiet, nice looking, and helps out some while still keeping trails open.

Well said. I live in Michigan, and the decibel limit is 94. I dont think HMF makes an exhaust thats 94 db. No sense of paying money for a pipe you cant ride with on your quad without getting a ticket. Heck at the local orv park, The Mounds, they sound check you before you go in. If your to loud, no play for you!

here in WI it is 96, they are starting to get better with the testing too. the dnr finally bought a bunch of dB meters and learned how to use them.

some areas have been bad for a while but every system here is starting to get more and more wardens testing on them. I highly doubt my t-4 would make the cut, my q4 however will. I run my q4 on the trails at all times. it is bad enough i sometimes ride with my t-4 on around my house. it is pretty loud even at 95-96 dB.

theres no reason that these companies cant make them quiet, they just choose not to.

i dont mind loud exhausts but it does get old listening to them all the time. esp on the snowmobiles...

Steve, I think you and I should start building "Custom" exhausts out of old Campbells Soup cans,...
we'll do the muffler from a Folgers Coffee can stuffed with steel wool,...

Claim that the can ridges induce a "Perfect Harmonic Resonance for Maximum Flow",...

and say that it delivers 10 more HP, and DOUBLES the range on a single tank of gas !

We'll be RICH !!! http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n148/tri5ron/Emoticons%20and%20funny%20pics/BSmeter.gif

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that it'll Sound really cool too !

MAN,..... I just LOVE those "Audio Dyno's", that so many here think equals "More Power"...

On a more serious note, dose anybody but me think its weird that exhaust companys offer quiet system for dirt bike but when it comes to our fourwheelers there always so loud? i mean flip through a dirtbike mag and 96 dB is the norm for the aftermarket exhausts.
