Hey guys, i bought great bike couple days ago, i was told its a 426 with a stage 1 hot cam, new clutch, new timing chain, he said he had changed the sprockets 1 bigger in front, 2 bigger in rear.

I do more trail riding so i was planning on changing the sprockets back to stock. i went and counted the sprockets and its 15 in front, 38 rear. so now im confused and i really just wanted to go through the bike and see what i really have here before i do anything.

Is there a good way to find out whats been done to the bike without major work?

Not really. Gotta take it apart to see if anythings been done.

You can take the carburetor apart and see how it's jetted.

Also if it's a high compression piston you should be able to tell by the way it revs, unless of course you're not familiar with the stock 400ex revs and then you would have nothing to compare it to.

My 426 is jetted with a 175 main jet so maybe that will help you a little.

^ While that does help a bit, you gotta remember that just cause its jetted a certain way doesnt mean the engines had much work done to it. Imagine someone whose at sea level with a 170 and another person whose 5000ft up is way lower.

Honestly easiest way to tell is to ride a stock 400ex, if yours is much faster than it has had something done to it. But the only real way to prove what you got is to take the topend down, check the cam and measure the piston to see the size.

Thats not a bad trail build. As long as you take care of it you shouldnt have any issues with a 426. Not like you have a 440 with stage 3 hotcams and huge a arms. But I agree, its always good to know what you have lol. but nah you would hafta take it apart to truly know.

Well, I had a stock 400ex before this one but I didn't keep it long and it wasn't jetted right at all. I did race a little with my buddy, he's on an 08 450r. I hung pretty well until 4th. I think it may be a 426 for sure after that. Revs quick if that helps.
