so my step dad just got a 1955 willys jeep he plans on fixing it up. and i was wondering sence it takes a 6 volt battery, would you b able to jump start it with a 12v car w/o frying the wire harness??

thanks

You can convert it to 12v, its pretty easy and they sell kits for it.

You can jump it with 12 volt. Just dont leave the cables hooked up for longer then it takes to start. The 6 volt wiring in older cars (if in descent shape) is much more robust then what we have now. Check how the wiring is first. Is the cloth all frayed and the insulation cracked? if not then it will be fine.

I use to jump my old Ford coupe every now and then when needed . 6 volt positive ground system. That starter sure would spin under the extra voltage and fire that flathead right up.

If you are looking to keep it stock or stockish and want to keep it 6 volt look around online for 8 volt tractor batteries. I ran them in a few of my hotrods and customs and it would keep the headlights from dimming at idle (like at a stop light) light most 6 volt cars do.

correct me if im wrong because its been years since we bought a 6 volt tractor but i believe you can jump it wit a 12 volt if you do it directly to the starter? bypass the entire harness and just basically directly give the starter some juice? i could be wrong but just curious myself?

you can jump start it. Done it many times. Just don't leave it hooked up very long.

on a 6 volt tractor they have the cables reversed. (positive goes to the body neg goes to the harness)

Just make sure when you hook it up you have it done correctly...don't just assume the bear wire is ground, read the marks on the top of the batery.

thanks you cant use the 12volt in place of the 6 volt or you will fry the system... however if done properly you can use 12volts to start only, the starter motor can take the extra voltage

in the same way we put 24 volt (2-12volt) staring systems in our quads or boats,
electricity takes the easiest path to ground, when wired properly the only place the higher voltage will be present is to the starter motor,
dont jump at the battery, but ground the battery to starter ground and the positive on the solenoid,,

google 24 volt starting systems on a 12volt and you should be able to find something that will make sense when looking at your willys. to help isolate the higher voltage to the starter only
