Hey guys, i've read through quite a few posts about doing a hybrid. I'll explain my situation and you guys tell me if it's worth it......

I just finished a 426ex and after about a month the cam sprocket came off and trashed my head and rocker cover and cam and sprockets.

I have an opportunity to pick up a 02 crf450 motor with a kickstart. I understand it will take some welding and mcgievering to get the motor in the frame. Is this project worth my time? I would love to have all that power in my ex frame but i'm just curious as to what i need to consider when doing this project. I've got nothing but time and the money comes twice a month so i'm definetly up for doing this!

Right now the quad is down to the frame. I'm going to powdercoat my frame and a arms while it's all down, but do you think this 450 motor will be a good route or should i just repair my current motor and run that way?

it all depends on your fab skills wether it would be worth it or not. if its a hack job conversion you going to have more problems with stuff breaking then it worth. if you take your time and do it correctly it will be a nice machine.

i'm just curious as to how well this motor goes into the 400ex frame. I'm asking for experience and any crazy mods that need to be done. I can do the basics and i have several welder friends who can set me up with some good mounts, but i'm just wondering if there's anything that i should know beforehand. anything that wouldn't make it worth the trouble. Does the lower rear motor mount get used in this conversion?

I'm sure it's been done several times so that's why i'm here asking the guys who've already done it!

i swaped a yzf motor in a 400ex frame and ended up shor ton time so i had to mig weld mounts in instead of tig. that motor fit in great. im thinking the crf is a little taller. as far as the motor swap goes it will be well worth the time depending on what kind of riding you do. another thing is im pretty sure the swingarm has to be milled down.

is the yzf motor a better fit? this 450 looks like alot of machine work.

couldnt tell you if it was easier or not. iv enever converted for the crf. atleast not yet. i did notch out the frame rail for the rear shock mount for a better intake fit. and welded in a cover and gusset under that for the yzf conversion.

that link is the best way to do it. however it can be done without some of those steps
