Is there a mod of some sort I have to do to make a 450 rear shock fit a 400?

No, only slight difference in length...450r rear shock isn't any kind of an upgrade if that is what you are looking for from it..

For some reason it acts like its binding on something. The top bolt goes through and the bottom one wont. Or the bottom one will and the top wont? Is there is a specific order

you might have to move the swinger up and down, until it will line up just right....not an easy task, but it can be done...that sort of thing usually is a little easier with a buddies helping hand

I mount mine at the top first, I also take the bolt out of my link so the shock will line up, and then line the link back up and put bolt back in, torque to 43 ft/lbs, and your good to go

Make sure your quad is on a stand while doing this. I like to put the top bolt in first also, then pick up on your axle to line up the bottom bolt. What year 450 shock? Scheweezy is right, it's not really an upgrade.

The 05 450R shock is shorter, so it will lower your ride height on your 400, but that's because you lost wheel travel. The 450R shock compressed length is also much shorter, so you risk your frame contacting the ground when bottoming out.

x2...you might want to look into gettin a xc or mx rear link if you wish to run the 450 shock to get full travel without damaging your bike...you should be okay on not scrapping but it will be close...450r's have issues with the rear link and it is almost a must change if you wish to ride any kind of aggressive style

Thanks. I'll look into the linkage for xc. or just find a better rear shock. A freind gave it to me thought I would just try it out.

yeah man, if your other is completely worn out, go ahead and throw it on there...it'll keep you riding...but if you plan on doing any kind of aggressive riding (like racing) using that shock id def look into a new link

If you get a GT Thunder linkage (which I HIGHLY recommend), you should get your stock shock rebuilt! If you use a 450 shock with a GTT linkage, you'll definately be dragging your frame! The GT Thunder linkages are built for max usable travel with the stock shock lengths; using another shock won't work as well. If you're riding XC (20" rear tires), you can throw the 450 shock on there with the stock link and use it, but a GTT link will be TONS better.

thats the only riding I do is xc. And Im running 20's so do you think still go with the 400 rebuild? or try this 450 and get it rebuit?

The better setup is a GTT XC link with a rebuilt 400 shock. I claimed the 450 would "work" with your stock link because you shouldn't run into frame drag issues.
