View Full Version : Truck Mud Tires - Aggressive Side Walls

Hey guys! I am currently looking for new tires for my truck and I will not lie to you, I am mainly looking for an aggressive looking tire. I like the Kelly Safari TSR's, however I am looking for something that has a mean looking side wall. I like the Nitto Mud Grappler and the TSL Bogger, but I am not sure if either are practical being the truck is going to be 75% daily driver 25% off road.. and I am just looking for 33in tires.. nothing any larger!

So post up some ideas of good looking/mean looking tires!

Thank You!
Colton W.

no mud tire is really practical. whats your question? yeah mud grapplers look cool

mud grapplers have a gnarly sidewall. also so do the maxxis creepy crawler and trepador. i really like the raised sidewall of the toyo MT too.

i am on my second set of mickey thompson MTZ... -LOVE- them.

Just cause the sidewall looks cool doesnt mean its truly functional. Mud tires are very soft and will wear down quite fast so if your gonna pay 900 bucks in tires I hope you dont drive more than 10k a year cause they are gonna wear pretty badly otherwise.

I prefer the firestone MT, its cheaper and gets the job done off and on road. If you want super aggressive looking the pitbull rocker is what you want-but they are $$$$$, maybe a maxxis buckshot mudder would suffice.

Last set of mudders I ran were the firestones-they dont look insanely aggressive but they lasted 35k at least and worked well everywhere.

i was over 60,000 on my first set of MTZ's when i blew one on the freeway (hit something) so i just replaced all of them. weren't on the wear bears quite yet tho!!

here's the two i sold (kept one for a spare):

^ Thats dang good mileage out of them, Im not a huge MT fan mostly b/c the voids in them are to small to clean out very good for my liking tho.

Still impressive. What kinda truck were they on?

ford super duty. as you can tell i have some front end parts to replace, lol.

i could not believe the mileage i got out of them. yeah i drive conservatively and the truck is a regular cab w/ a V8 gasser.. but it still blew my mind. i didn't even bother looking at other tires to replace them with.

I've had real good luck with bfgs. I have the km2s on my 3500 dodge. And I've always used the original bfg mts on my jeeps. Both are great wearing tires for a mt. I love the look of the new km2s too!

Weird. I'm looking for almost the exact opposite. I'm looking for a mud tire as road-friendly and non-aggressive as I can get. But at 38-40 inch diameter and at least 15 inches wide, my options are kinda limited.

I like the Super Swamper SSR, but they aren't available at the moment. From what I understand, Interco Tire had a subcontractor for the SSR tires, and the subcontractor went out of business. So while Interco still has the molds for the tires, they don't have anybody to make them at the moment.

these are what my cousin put on his '79 bronco....he put roughly 40.000 miles before they where toast but he always had the rims full of mud....they wobbled so bad at highway speed he cracked the windshield...

Just trying to throw in my .02 here. I bought some tires a little while ago and I have about the same driving as you and I would really suggest going with an All Terrain tire. Yeah the MT's look cool and all, but the extra noise is annoying and it actually does get less MPG. If I could do it again I would buy some AT's over my MT's.

see if the mickey thompson ATZ is available in that size; if i ever go to a 20" rim that's probably what i'll run.

I just put the kelly safari tsr on the girlfriends truck last night in a 315/70 17. They are awesome looking and have some side wall lugs. So far they are really quiet. One of the guys at the tire shop has them on his ram and said he loves them and has approximately 18k on them and show little signs of wear. Not to mention they are really reasonably priced for that much meat, we paid 1050 out the door for them. Ill try to get a pic tonight and post it up

my friend has tsl boggers on his duramax and the eat up the mud lol. they pur good but not as bad as you would think. on 3+ hour long trips during summer they will fling chunks of tread off.

the thornbird is a better street tire than the tsl with mean side tread and it rides almost like a radiel. my dad has it and i'm going to get it in 38' for my duramax too. great tire.

Boggers are a no go on the street, with me I just dont see spending about 300 400 a tire to burn off on the pavement, the thornbirds as well the centers wear so bad compared to the side lug, all you'll have soon is a meat on the side, best bet i'd say would be a tsl radial, get some kind of mud radial much better on roads but still get what ya need on the trail.

it seems like most people get the M/T baja claws or the mtz of some **** like that. i prefer mean mudders but they will last a while.

cooper discover STT are nice they resemble the Toyo m/t but a whole lot less money and seem to wear good but like any tire especially mud tires you need to keep them rotated a little more often.

I have the Cooper's and I love them. They are not that loud on the highway and they look great and perform well. However, when they go I am going back to a BFG AT bc of the mpg diff.

a friend of mine has those creepy crawlers and they are mean as hell but i wouldn't drive them on the road probably wouldn't get much life out of them. I would stick with Mtz if i wanted a aggressive looking tire from what ive heard from bender and others.

check these out, i talked to a guy the other day that owns a logging business and said he had them on all his pick ups and said he has had no complaints out of them! they looked badass to http://www.fiercetires.com/tires/attitude-mt/index.html

I've got 33x12.50R20 Kuhmo Road Venture MTs on my duramax. You could say they look cool but I wouldn't use the term practical. They are a directional tire and that makes them look cool. The rims and tires will be up for sale here this summer, so if you know of anyone looking for some! The rims are Helo 835s and are black.

Try to keep your allignment good and tires inflated properly too. Has alot to do with how many miles youll get. I had some 33 inch Mud Kings and they were great for me. Cheap also. Not exactly main brand but they rocked.

Thornbirds are miserable. Wear terrible, terrible off road, terrible on rocks, loud as a bogger. Most true off roaders HATE them.

i've been checking out tires for my truck as they will need to be replaced soon. i got 33/12.5/16.5. problem is that it seems hard to find one for a 16.5" rim. i'm looking for a streetable tire with an aggressive tread. kinda like the mtz. any suggestions?

ditch the 16.5 and get a more common wheel size. more choices and you will have a bead to keep the tire on the wheel when aired down.

Kelly is pary of the goodyear/ dunlop conglomerate so the may share some of the design patterns and carcasses and such. Thats part of the reason we got them, is that the girlfriends dad works for dunlop and we get a bunch of rebates on their tires
