Im about to buy a 2004 trx450r carb off ebay and i want to know if it will work with my 03 400ex.

since im upgrading to a je 10.5:1 race piston(keeping stock 85mm bore), stage 2 hotcam, cometic gasket kit

and already have a crf450r timing chain, K&N air filter, dual looney tuned full racing exhaust

will this be a good idea and will it give me better performance? and will it be better for the motor since the compression will be higher?

the carb is HRC jetted as well and has a hot start cable. what does hot start cable mean and do?

i just want to know what everyones opinion is on this. should i go for it or not? ends really soon so reply quick haha

thanks everyone

Do it... it's not a direct fit... search 450r carbs and you'll see plenty of posts... i just did mine... and other then a high idle i've VERY happy with it... get it and follow the instuctions offered by the other.s....

Mine seemed to take offa bit faster... soo.. i would say more power and quicker thottle... seems much more peppier then the 400ex carb...

Remember... you can always get it and if it was not worth it you can always sell it later...

ok, i mean like my 400(when i didnt snap the timing chain) took off like a bat outta hell. i never rode a quad that had this much torque and power. wanna hear something funny? this has so much power, the first time i got it going and decided to open up the throttle, it took off so fast and so powerful that it made me snap my renthal bars hahaha

lol you a**hole hahaha my heart just stopped for a second haha.
but is the HRC kit good? all it is is just a normal jet kit like a dyno jet right?

1. HRC kit has a different needle, and jets. Needle may work or not-IDK.

2. Please do not use dynojets (incase you were going to), use OEM keihin jets at www.jetsrus.com

you will have to change the jetting in it anyway so it doesnt really matter.

it may have a different needle though which could cause an issue. we mostly use the stock needle instead of the hrc stuff.

you will need a few plugs and if you want to make it easy, an adapter made by zrpilot a member on here.

we usually use the hot start lever plunger and the boot without the cable, then add rtv or similar to the hole to fill it in.
there is another one on top that needs to be plugged also.
the wires can be cut off too.

zr pilot has a pretty nice writeup that is located in the stickies on how to do it.

around a 162-165 main with a 50 pilot, what are you at now?

my suggestion is to go up 2-3 sizes from what you are at now when switching to a 450r carb.

Well that would explain why your 400ex does not take off like you say it used to. If you have never jetted the carb and are running what you say in your signature then you're WAY out of tune. You're most likely running VERY lean.
