Can someone with a lot of expirience tell me some stuff you should know about head studs, head gaskets, or the head itself???

Due to the excessive heat build up of a 440 (the cyl is at its limit) and the less than stellar holding power of the stock studs themselves, they usually pull out.

3 things you must do if your gonna run a 440:
1. Heavy duty head studs from GT Thunder. Well worth the 100 bucks
2. Good gaskets, I will only use cometic as they seal better imho as many others would agree.
3. Make damn sure its jetted right, if its now you will blow it.

Oh and to play devils advocate:
A 440 is not all that, you will find the right combo of parts in a 416 or 426 will not only rev faster-but make more power than a 440. What a 440 does have more of is torque-but like I said above-hardly noticeable with right set of parts.

If you shave the head off the top of the nut you can tighten it a lil more.... what happens is it will only go so far down till it bottoms out with the top still on..... witch will keep it from pulling it down tight...... also if you get your cylinder o-ring it want blow the head gasket...... some guy's on here will say get gt bolt kit's ..... but i dont feel you need to do all that... we run a 12.5.1 piston cyl. is decked 0.25 witch put me at around 13.2.1 and im spraying nos on top of the high comp...... most will say you cant do what im doing but i will say this... we put over 200 passes on that set up befor we changed the crank to put a bigger shot of nos on it.... look us up on youtube ericcrip1...... thats all you will need to see.... that 440 gets down for the honda 400 ex lover's.

My 440 does NOT have HD studs or any extra oil cooling accesories.

Going on 6 years now, still runs great.

But if your gonna do a 440, you might as well take the extra precautions.

Well the guy i bought this from didn't know what he was doing and he stripped like 6 bolts and studs right out of the aluminum head because he farmer tightened everything so i had my work cut out for me but i am 15 and its hard because i don't have a superb knowledge for this stuff but i tapped and drilled out the holes with a drill press and dropped some stockier bolts in and we are now waiting for a new gasket set from cometic. i just bought one and installed and rode the 440 for about a half an hour and noticed i was blowing compression out the left side of the head and then took it apart for like the 6th time then i found what the problem but i didn't know the head bolts were stripped out because they torqued....so.

so...

you have 2 big run on sentences. that are poorly written and hard to read.

lol

my suggestion, hd studs are good for reassurance purposes when out in the middle of no-where riding by yourself.

they arent needed, i am tossed between running them or not, but probably will since i dont have any studs in my cylinder at the moment.

everyone here has valid points, alot of us have good luck, others dont though.

it sounds like you are on the tight track though, how did you install the studs? cut them with a a tap or roll formed them with a tap? hopefully you rolled them otherwise they will probably pull out again. they are not really supposed to be cut into the cylinder since that removes the material, instead of compressing it making it more dense and makes for a better material to hold to.

All i did was tap in bigger/better threads. then Drilled out the head a little bit, not anything to hurt the engine, so i could put some bigger american studs. I also used course thread for some more hold.

that is not the problem..

the problem is that the aluminum head gets so hot, especially by the exhaust ports, that it causes the area around the threads and the threads themselves to soften. that, combined with too fine of a thread means blown headgaskets from pulling studs. 90% of the time, it'll be the stud facing the front of the engine.
