Quick question

To replace valve seals on an `02 400ex do you just have to take the valve cover off or do you have to take the head off also?

You'll have to take the head off to remove the valves an springs to replace the seals. A tricky job without the right tools.

well most do because u cann't really use auto compressors on atvs so u need to use a tool like this http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/productDetail.do?navType=type&webTypeId=140&navTitle=Tools%2FShop&webCatId=22&keyword=valve+seals&prodFamilyId=16404 it kind of like a big c clamp and u need to put one end on the valve and the other on the spring. i have used a home made version of this with a pipe and a vay large clamp but i got the tool edventually and it makes the job so much easyer

No, the head must come off no matter what. You cant get to the valve springs without removing it-the special tool takes off the springs.
