how dose the power compare to a 400ex. what would it take to get one to keep up with a 400

A 400ex will take a 300ex in a straight line everytime. It would probaly take a lot to get a 300ex to compete with a 400ex. In the woods is a different story, and I would rather have a 300ex in the woods any time. In my opinion any 400cc or bigger atv is geared way too high for the woods. Just my two cents.

Stock machines do not compare. The 400 will eat the little 300 in any situation INCLUDING in the woods. Its actually not that hard though to get the 300 to keep up with a stock 400 though.

Ive seen a 76mm bore, 13:1 piston, HC2, Port and Polish, bigger valves, and 400ex carbed little 296 absolutely run away from a stock 400 in a drag race. They are lighter and can be much faster with the correct work.

If you are serious about your little 282ex, get a hold of Four Stroke Tech....

I am not sure where you ride, but where I ride a 300ex will keep up with if not do better than a 400ex. My 300ex has 10 times the bottom end of just about any 400cc atv I ride with. Like I said before they are geared way to high for the woods.

I don't really know what that is supposed to mean, but my 300ex still performed better than a 400ex without wheel spacers.

Even with a six pack rack???? Dang. I just got squirted with a water gun full of jealousy.

What is your deal? I was just telling him my opinion, and what I KNOW is true.

My opinion is if you want to keep up with a 400, buy a 400. Ive ridden them all thousands of miles, and a 300ex just isnt a 400. As much as some may want to believe they are as fast, they just arent. To say they are geared too high is just dumb considering the 450r is even higher yet anyone racing and winning in the woods is aboard a 450r.... How many national champs do you see in gncc on a 300? Thats a big ole zero, thats how many.

Im headed out to the garage now to gear my spare 400 down now.

First of all GNCC is not considered a "woods" to me. That maybe what you consider a rough trail or "woods", but I ride in some pretty rough places. Where I ride a 400 is geared way too high therefore a 300ex is perfect for the trails I ride on. I can't help that you don't understand what a real trail is. Me and my 300ex could probaly take anyone with any size quad where I ride.

A real trail???? Id give anything to be 16 and clueless again.

A 300ex is 17hp and tops out in the high 40mph
A 400ex is 27 hp and tops out in the low to mid 60mph range.

You could throw in a comparison of modern 450's which produce 35 to 45 horsepower and can top out at above 70mph.

Ive had a 1996 300ex back before the era of powerful 4 stroke quads and I did manage to get it to 26horsepower. It took a 406 stroker kit with porting, cams ,exhaust ,oversized valves, lectron carb to do it. Had I known what I do now about setting up engines Im sure it would have been over 30hp. Reliabilty was good but it did snap a crank web after 2 years. then of course there is a ton of money required to get a 300ex suspension to be wide and well suspended enough to handle that kind of power. When all was said and done I could have bought 2 400exs and had a lot more free time to ride them.

Id say you would be foolish to soup up a 300ex and even go to the relatively underpowered 400ex when there are far superior machines out there for not much more money.

A 300ex may not be a that you all say a 400 is, but I still think that it is the best atv EVER MADE.

Um a stock 300ex will hit close to 55mph with stock tires and rev limiter. Its a fact. I was side by side with a 660 grizzly at top speed and we were goin 59mph mines not stock though. But a stock one will hit 55.

I agree it doesn't take much to keep up with a stock 400ex, but in the woods it depends on the rider. I own a 300ex and my dad owns a 400ex I love both machines, But I can say the 400ex in a topend race the 400ex wins everytime.

I used to think that too.. i loved my 300ex, and still do.. This was all fine until i rode a KFX400 Stock.. My mind was made up.. not only was it faster.. its suspension was way more forgiving that the 300. i could jump higher and further. if i would land wrong on the 300, i would get tossed off or jerked very hard. Not the case at all with the 400. i know comparing a KFX with a 400ex is quite different.. its still kinda the same .heh :)

im wondering how many quads he have owned before. i love both my quads, as u can see in my signature i still own it.. and invested a little $$ in it. i know i will never sell it tho. its just 2 much fun. WHEELIE KING!!!

Its not a question of whos quad is faster, or better.. the question is DO YOU HAVE FUN RIDING. if so RIDE ON!!

I do agree with you that a KFX 400 is a great atv, but they are still geared too high for where I ride.

can't this be fixed by smaller gear in front like 13 or 12... or 20in tires instead of 22? my 300ex has 20in tires and 13 tooth sprocket in front. so my gearing is no where near stock.

or you talking internal tranny gearing?

A 300EX comes with a 13 tooth front sprocket from the factory and 22inch tires. One of the guys that I ride with has 20inch tires and his KFX and it is still geared too high. I think that he has ordered a smaller front sprocket and maybe a bigger rear sprocket. I will see if they help the next time we ride.

Lol. That's all I really have to say to all of this. And I love when ppl say this quad or that quad could keep up with me where THEY ride. Like their the best riders in the world. Hell I bet I could pick a trail where I could beat ur quad on foot. And you realize you can gear quads down right? I'm a huge fan of the 300ex I beat a lot of **** talkers in the woods but no its not the best machine out there. And sure you can put money into them and make em fast but you can do that to ANYTHING

I use to have a 300ex and i definately see how you say they are good in tighter rough stuff, i loved mine and i could pretty much take it through anything without stalling,,killer bike. BUT THEN I GOT A 400ex. for me i can ride faster due to more usable power and MUCH better suspension. plus my 400 is 05 so it came stock with 14T front sprocket. i thought my 300 was the best thing in the woods and i could definately ride it like it was, i was fast. but now im onto bigger and better 400ex.

here is a pic of my old 380ex from 2002-03. I did go a little nuts with it but it by far was one of the funnest if not the funnest quads I have ever owned. I would for sure build another one if i got a engine that was sound and a frame for cheap. It also helps that I do all my own engine work other than porting and sleeving so that keeps the cost down. This was 33hp and I ran 15/33 gearing witch gave a top speed with 18"tires around 73mph. She was a beast for a little 300! lol

The main reason that I liked my 300 so much is that I am only 5'2" so it just fits me better.
