i've done it several times with a piece of sand paper on my old beater dirt bikes, works fine.

does the cylinder need cross hatching?can that been done with sanding lightly?

you can probably just bolt the cylinder back on without even touching it, if it's clean. i just lightly and quickly scuffed it

you could also bring it to a machine shop, for only honing it's probably less then 10$.
That's how I do it ;)

You could also do like I did- contact your local industrial tool supplier and buy a ball hone for $22.00. Then you are set for all your future top-end rebuilds.

don't even need an industrial supply store, auto parts stores sell them

I had went with the industrial supply place because they had the correct diameter ball hone in stock. I'm sure an auto parts store could order one. Unless you have a really well stocked auto parts store, then you might get lucky.
