I went out for a short driveway ride to keep the ex running and broke it.

The clutch lever is limp, but I don't think the Cable is snapped or frayed.

adjusting at the lever couldn't fix it, but I couldn't try at the case since the exhaust was still hot.

Any idea what caused this?

Sounds like either your cable snapped, or maybe the clutch lever arm that goes into the case broke

The clutch lifter may have broke. I've heard of these breaking before in the 400EX.

It's part 10 in this pic. You will see it protruding out of the center of the clutch basket assembly when you take the clutch cover off.

Yah I had that happen to me before.. the lifter on mine was worn out. The flat piece at the end wore right down to nothing.

sounds like a simple broken cable

^^ x2.. When that piece wore out on me, the clutch was still stiff as it usually was, the clutch just wouldnt engage..

A limp lever sounds like a cable

thole lifters shouldn't be wearing out guys, there is a bearing that allows the clutch pressure plate to spin freely while the lifter stays in place, i beat the piss out of my 2000 and have replaced the clutch only once recently, i checked all the parts while it was apart and there was barely even a ring or mark where my arm pulls on it

I replaced mine about 7-8 years ago and it's been fine since then.. I'm not sure why it happened, I was still pretty green(er) behind the ears when I did it :p
