i know theres a thread below about cutting slip-on's down for power and sound. the stock 400ex pipe has 3 chambers am i right? i was wondering if you guys think it may be possible to remove the end chamber and make the exhaust into a shorty for a better sound without removing everything? thanks guys!

i think i might have to find a stocker on craigslist or somthing and see! im thinking i could try it on a 400ex pipe or possibly a 450r muffler. does anyone know what the internals of a 450r pipe are like?
04-05 450r muffler = baffles juste like 400ex muffler
06 + 450r muffler = free-flowing straight design like all aftermarket pipes.
I put a 08 450r muffler on my 400ex, it requires modifying the header pipe to match the muffler's curve and diameter. But its pretty minim. You also have to fab the rear mount and drill the front one to bolt-up.
The main advantages from the 2006 + 450r muffler versus the OEM 400ex are:
- Straight-Through design just like aftermarket pipes (no baffles) wich makes it the best free-flowing OEM pipe you can bolt on a 400ex.
- StainlessSteel construction wich makes it at least half the weight of the Stock 400ex, maybe more. And much more durable.
- Upgradable by changing the tip for HRC or other wich renders the pipe basicaly the equivalent of a performance pipe.
I don't think this is a good solution for everyone and MY main reason I did this is we are very restricted around here for winter riding and we get almost instantly busted (tickets) when riding trails with an aftermarket pipe...

i've also considered a 450r pipe in the past and now its not looking to bad anymore..haha, looks like i should check out an 06+. do you have any idea what DB level it runs at? and what kind of a sound does it give you? im pretty sure i could fab it to work.
Well.. DB level its hard for me to tell, I never heard a stock 450r sound before but what I can tell is this:
Compared to completely stock 400ex pipe;
- Louder from idle to mid and much louder at full throttle, racey sound, very nice.
Compared to open-tip and drilled baffle 400ex muffler
- Quieter at all rpms but much higher pitch tone at high rpm instead of low tone
- Sounds wwwaaaayyyy nicer than gusset-up 400ex muffler, doesn't even compare.. modified open-tip muffler really sounds like crap !

but would you say its still quite a bit quieter then most other aftermarket pipes? a small performance gain would be nice its just stock i dont really like the 400ex's sound. when im reving it makes me think of a ricer haha :D

from what i read, 89dB stock, 93 dB HRC for the 450r.
88dB stock 400ex the next one would be the fmf q4 at 90-91 dB, then the t-4 at 95dB along with a few others, and the rest go up from there up to well into the 100s such as 102 and 103 dB from a sparks and a couple others.

i remember when i had my 300ex with a WB no packing when i first got it.....hear me coming from quite a ways. louder then my buddies dad's factory KTM 505 :eek2:
thanks for the info steve! might have to look into an 06+ 450r exhaust... what would your jetting suggestions be?

depending on if you are above or below 1500 ft and if you have a filter
152 or 150 with a 40 pilot at 2.5 turns out on the f/a and the needle on the 3rd notch.
152 with a filter below 1500
150 at 1500 or more with a filter
:D

well i ride dunes(sea level) and then we also have property i ride on quite a bit in the mountains..not sure of the exact elevation there but would you say probably just the 152 to richen it up a bit and throw on a uni too?
honda400ex2003
04-11-2011, 08:02 PM
yeah, 152 without and a 450 slip on would be good without a lid a 155 with a lid i suppose. this would get you plenty down low but you would def have to be down at a 150 anything over 5000-6000 ft. a 152 at around 3000-5000.

well i googled elevations and it looks like my areas go from about sea level to MAYBE 2000 TOPS and thats a little bit of a over estimate. id probably plan on a 450r slip on with a uni and lid on because of trails and oregon being oregon :D
honda400ex2003
04-11-2011, 08:09 PM
well then... that will change it all lol.
152 uni slip with lid on
155 lid off uni filter
40, 2.5 turns, 3rd notch

haha alright thanks for the info. im sure being the jetting guru gets to be like a broken record sometimes :p time to look for an 06+ 450r pipe and use the rest of my motosport giftcard for jets and a uni

haha well i think i better check it out and read up! just found a 450r pipe for 30 shipped looks like ima jump on it! i'm starting to assemble a little pile of parts that need to be put on :macho

i love parts piles.
read the jetting placement one, it will explain how to do a plug chop and shows the proper plug colors and such too. tuning the f/a screw and such also. it even has the elevation and temperature change stuff in it.
What i provided will get you pretty close, within 1 jet size either way for the most part but you will still have to do a plug chop at each part of the carb circuit (main, pilot, needle)
I hope that helps you out a bit.

i'll be sure to PM you when i get it all together and ready for parts. are all 400ex carbs the same with the A/F screw..my dad was saying somthing about it being on the bottom??
honda400ex2003
04-11-2011, 09:58 PM
yup bottom, you need a tool for yours though. it is a D tool to turn your f/a since it is an 05 carb. you dont have an adjustable needle in yours either.

 :cuss: your suggestion for the needle dilema? ALSO for whoever else has this pipe like PLF does the pipe still flow good even without the HRC end cap? or do i really need to buy one to make this a better flowing pipe?

get an old style one in a rebuild kit or order one. I know marc just ordered his, maybe he will chime in with the correct numbers. I think he got his from service honda. you can also get the f/a screw from service too and run the whole hardware from the 04 or less carbs. it does get pricey though, since they are special pieces.
imo you wont probably have to do anything to the needle anyway so i would recommend against buying one right away.
the f/a screw tool can be made out of a .22 caliber shell i think, bought at an auto parts store, or from dyno jet.

alright well maybe i'll just leave the needle unless it really does act up. how exactly does the .22 shell work? i have tons empties and loads in the house so no worry there.

im not exactly sure how to do it, just bend one side flat i think. there are a couple of threads with some info on it, along with some other recommendations on other shells you might be able to try.

i just used the all mighty site search engine and looks pretty easy! i havent spent alot of time checking out my carb but do you think it would be best to take the whole thing off to change jets and adjust?
honda400ex2003
04-12-2011, 01:28 PM
to just do the main you can get a 17mm wrench and take off the plug on the bottom of the bowl. to do the pilot the bowl has to come off though.
the f/a can be done with it on there too but if i need to make sure it is exact, i loosen up the clamps and spin it a bit so i can get a flat head in there to turn it easy. i have a small one that i can adjust it with on the fly but it is hard to count lol.

alright sweet! im use to working on dirtbikes with my buddies and there dad, thats when we take the whole thing off. earlier you reccomended a 40 pilot? i just looked at the jetting chart and it said a 38 pilot. whats the point of a 40?
honda400ex2003
04-12-2011, 02:08 PM
a bit easier starting and less turns out on the f/a screw since it is richer.

ahh now i see, thanks steve! so im looking at 152 main 40 pilot ?????F/A screw. for a slip on 450r and uni. are there any comparable filters? i saw a tusk one and was wondering if they're any good, same with moose!
honda400ex2003
04-12-2011, 02:28 PM
honestly im not real familiar with foam ones but they are all very similar. I think that most of them are just a uni under a different brand. they would all be comparable as far as flow imo.
also yes i would go 152, 40, 2.5 turns out with a uni and a slip on.

maybe i'll have to do a review on moose air filters then! thanks for the info and all.....time to wait for shipping and parts :grr:
