I just bought a 5x8 trailer from Northern Tool this past weekend. It has the ramp on the back & has the wire mesh bottom...so here's my question how can I fit a 400EX & an Apex mini quad on there??? I heard about ramps used on the front, the bike turned sideways, & so forth. Does anybody have any ideas??? I do have access to a machine shop so I able to modify some. If anyone has pictures of there quads loaded up on a 5x8 or other trailers that might help please share!!!!

Not sure the exact measurements of a mini, but the EX is about 70 inches long and about 50 inches wide. The mini might fit if you over hang one of the quads over the front or maybe you can fit one sideways and one long ways?

Thanks! I had heard this from someone locally. I hope someone can share a picture or 2 of this set-up. I've Googled it but either the pic is so small you can't make it out or none at all.

You should be able to do it if the bed of the trailer actually measures 5x8 and its flat.

Or you could stand the quads up like in the pic. I have been there and done that. It works but you have strap it down really good and it looks really redneck.

Wow in regards to the pic with the 3 quads in the bed of a pick up, If it works that's great. I just imagined you pulling out in your truck & the bed staying behind cause of the load! Lol! I'm not going to stack the bikes just cause of safety. Here is a link to show the type of trailer I have to help out.

Dont stand it up like that unless you want to wait for 5 mins for all the oilto drain back in to it.

There is now way you can fit 2 quads on there without modification. Its 50" x 80"

haha that's my pic......... it was just used to get into silver lake sand dunes from our camp site. Since they had no parking vouchers left we had to improvise.

The oil tank reservoir is above the engine if anything it would go into the motor. i wouldn't worry about that personally.

but on your trailer you shouldn't have to do that. i fit 3 quads on a 5x16 and had some room still but cant remember if it was 2 blaster and a 250ex or 2blasters and a raptor i know one went in the bed of the truck just cant remember ha. might have to put them both perpendicular to the road. the 400ex front end might have to hang of the side of the trailer or get some wood and make some ramps. this is assuming you have a railing. either way loading is going to suck and not sure about legality of doing it that way.

Standing them up doesn't hurt them. The oil will run down almost instantly, just have to make sure the gas is off. I store my sport quads standing up all winter long, and when I'm low on room any other time, never had a problem. If it does cause an issue, there's something wrong with your bike anyway.

yup and if you don't like the tires on the metal just slide the front one up a bit onto the frame.. will work fine :)..If it was a little wider you could put ramps on the side and just ride up, and they will be side ways.

Ive seen it come out the breather after sitting to long. Perhaps it was just a fluke.

i had the 400ex, a mojave, and kx125 on that trailer once too. and i loaded a mojave, kx125 and kx250 into the back of my old truck with a 6ft bed. wish i had picture of that lol

I have a 5X8 and I haul a 400ex and a Polaris Scrambler 500 all the time. I use 6 foot ramps and load them both sideways. My trailer has sides just like the pic that krt400ex posted. I just placed the front tires inside the trailer and left the rear tires sitting on top of the trailer sides. Recently I bolted some 2X6's across the top so that the quads sit flat as if the trailer was a flat bed. Now I am making plans to put a permanent top on it similar to a Jumping Jack Trailer. If you don't know what that is check it out they are pretty slick. http://www.jumpingjacktrailers.com/

I'll post a pic of my 2X6 setup in a bit.

Ive been toying with that idea for some time. Taking some 2x12s and making a solid platform I can bolt on and off.

Im mostly just thinking about figuring out a way to make the wheels sit lower than the rails and then making my trailer (5x10) into a 6.5x14. Easy to extend mine since its all square tube, but making it wider is much harder.

the only thing that bothers me is having the quads facing sideways,
I wouldn't mind my 450, but I wouldn't want to have my 25 year old 250r plastic stressing like that . at least when its facing forward the wind is flowing over the quad the way the plastic was designed to flow, sideways will cause some spider webbing or worse on old plastics, and covers dull the finish when flapping around,

^ That is true to a degree, while Ive never seen it plastics break-they sure to flop.

last time I transported one sideways we put the first one facing forward as a windbreak.

I don't have much trouble with the plastics. They flex a bit but not much. The truck breaks up the wind so it's not bad.

You usually don't have to worry about that but it can happen. In 2008 the remanent winds from Hurricane Ike blew across the midwest toward the north east. I was driving across Ohio. It was some of the strongest straight line winds I have ever seen. We had a cdale, a 450r and a RZR on a trailer. The cdale was in front sideways and the rear plastic folded. Luckily it didn't break but we ended up removing the plastic. The frame was enough to knock the wind down from damaging the 450r.

You will have a hard time fitting 2 full size quads on a 5x8 without some mods...

This was my trailer

http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n96/JForestZ34/MyQuads.jpg

I had some room left to spare but my trailer was bigger than a 5x8 also.. My quads wouldn't have fit in a 5x8 thou..

Thanks kbnorth99 for the pics...that's what I need! I like your idea. That is very possible & I like the idea of using the lower part for storage. The only problem would be my son's Apex 90cc quad plastic. It's only bolted toward the center under the seat but it should stay. Just don't like the idea of stressing anything on it. Here is a pic I found online on Google that I believe may work as well for me. What do you all think of this?

<a href="http://s237.photobucket.com/albums/ff282/EMT_DIVER/?action=view&amp;current=post-1554-1230960490.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff282/EMT_DIVER/post-1554-1230960490.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

It looks like 2x6's put on there. This also looks like this is very easy & won't have to do much work. :)

What is the weight limit on those small trailers?

kbnorth99

Thanks.

The wind on the side of the plastics hasn't posed a problem for the quads I am hauling but may be in the future. I have plans to build a couple of rails across the bed of my truck bed so a quad can be loaded sideways on top of the bed rails. That will really focus the wind on the plastics. I plan to use a net to secure the plastics down and still allow the wind through. I am thinking about using a piece of orange construction fence with some rope sections bonded to it. Originally I was trying to think of something to block the wind but I think it will be better to use a net to provide the support without trying to block the wind. I think the wind will overpower whatever I use. If all else fails I will build a deflector of some sort out of steel and plywood.

The 2X6's was a great idea. They were easy and cheap. I can store tons of gear below the quads and they are easy to load/unload. I am working on a simple system to secure the quads by the wheels so I don't have to compress the suspension when I tie them down.

It varies. Mine is about 1500lbs. I"m going to upgrade the axle at some point to a 3500# or 5000#.

That's an even better idea! I was thinking of that as well. It can't hurt to have the added safety of the quads being secured!
