I'm searching for a suitable replacement for the stock oil cooler. I found this hayden oil cooler (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HDA-677/?rtype=10)
I'm just questioning if this would be a good enough upgrade and if it would likely keep the oil at a somewhat lower temperature during a long day of riding. I don't like the idea of mounting a secondary cooler up front and exposing it to rocks and trail debris, plus there really isn't much room under the headlight and I'm not going to lose my light. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thats the way to do it imho, I tried to find the cooler he mentioned the other day on ebay-the place doesnt list one anymore in the size hes talking about-but a similar one should work fine.

Really tho, unless you have a modified motor that gets hot I wouldnt bother.

I don't know what I was thinking but this particular cooler is too tall. If I do go this route, it will have to be no more than 6" tall.

Have you tried a trans oil cooler from the auto parts store?

I know those will fit john, but I know that type is FRAGILE b/c of the tubes that stick out of the cooler-you hit one of them good somehow you might as well push the quad back in cause if it leaks your SOL.

The reasons that I don't want to use a cooler like that are
1. There isn't enough room to mount it up front where other people have done it.
2. I don't want it being totally exposed to rocks and debris.
I do like the installs I've seen like that but with the headlights on the later models, space in that area is compromised.

Holy S, the price on that first ebay item was through the roof. I like the second item except that I'd have to use AN fittings. The size is perfect though.
This one (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DER-13501/) may be what I'm going to use.

I think you might find it hard mating up the lines to make that work-but its possible.

Downside to that one is while its larger-its not as thick.

edit: this should work well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/16-Row-Universal-Engine-Oil-Cooler-IS250-IS300-IS350-/140490595139?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20b5e45b43

may stick out side to side a bit more-but you should be able to center it well. Whats actually stick out are the end mounting tabs anyways.

I hear ya... The more I look at the bike and take measurements, the more I think that I may reconsider a secondary cooler. I have plenty of time to figure it out. I'm just trying to pave the way for a cooling system that will be adequate for a 416/426 upgrade down the road.

Personally, I dont think a second cooler is even worth it.

Im looking to dump the stocker itself.

I think people use a CBR600 type oil cooler?

I agree with you there, I'm just against paying someone to do work on my quad.
My only reservation with the AN inlet/outlet is that I would likely have to pay someone to make me fittings with new lines attached. I'm not that familiar with making them or I'd do it myself.

I have a FST secondary oil cooler and it works awesome, well worth the money and effort. It uses the tranny oil cooler with a shield in front of it with lots of holes. I mounted it on the front bars in front of the quad. I have had it for 2 years now and do a lot of riding, and i have never had a problem.

Timp, can you post pics of the FST? I'm pretty sure I've never seen that particular setup.
