Im wanting to gear mine for higher top speed but dont know anything about gearing :/ im wanting top speed to be higher, but have pretty decent top end still, the only hp mods are a full hmf system, kn air filter, some hole drilled on the air box lid, so any opinions are welcome. i just want more top speed because whenever im riding with other people (banshee, yz, 700 raptor, etc) and we hit a field or straight away, i get blown away and loose them lol

Gearing will help but its not the end all.

If you have a 99-04 it will have stock 15tooth front / 38 tooth rear, 05-current have 14/39.

2 things you can do:
1. Go to a larger tooth on the front by 1 tooth. You will gain topend and lose lowend a bit. You will also need a new chain guard, I like pro design

2. Go down a size on the rear, this gives you slightly more speed but wont be as much a gain as changing the front is. The good news is it gives you a wee bit more topend but keeps your lowend.

For every 1 tooth you go up front it will be like changing 3 teeth in the rear. A larger front sprocket means more speed, a smaller one is torque, the rear is the opposite, smaller rear=speed, larger=torque.

Truth be told, your not gonna keep up with them to well unless you do some kinda engine mods. They just have alot more power than you and in stock form the 400 is SLOW.

Gearing Calculator (http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/400ex.htm)

Here is a gearing Calculator. I run a 14/38 and pulls good. It could use a 39 though in the rear. Acording to the calulator that puts me at 56 MPH with 14/39 and 18in tires. Torque Monster... Hope the link helps!!!

You prob wont ever keep up with a 700 er banshee on topend. I get a modded banshee off the line till like 3rd then he rapes me lol. And on a long run, theres no way I'll ever get him.
Not till I buy a 2011 yfz450r and mod the piss out of it! =)

A stock banshee runs around 71mph, the 660 raptors used to be about 72mph, a stock eX maybe 67ish. With a pipe/filter combo and a gear change you can probalby run "near" that flat out, but they are killing you with acceleration, not just flat out speed.

with my mods and 16/39 gearing with 22in tires I can get 70mph out of 4th gear in 1/8th of a mile. A stock or lightly bored EX doesnt have enough hp to accomplish this, it will take way to long to get max rpms after 3rd.
