I got a question about the 450r front shock conversion. Okay, I planned on buying this in a week or two when i get my pay check. But question is, are ALL year the same size (16-1/2) eye-eye? Another question, how much taller will my 400 sit up in the front? I have stock a-arms.....This is my first real purchase on the handling aspect of any quad, besides tires......

Will make the 400ex sit at max height, you gain about a good inch or so over stock.

16.5 450r
16.25 or its 16 400ex, I forget the exact measurements.

Thanks CJM, is there a downfall to getting the shocks, or are these shocks just bada**?

More adjustable than the 400ex shocks and they ride better-downside is although they absorb the bumps well they do tend to be a wee bit stiffer than stock.

I love mine.... I like them even more since Ive added my +2 a arms. They are a great upgrade. I barely noticed the difference in the ride height...

Well, I wanna be able to race MX....are these shocks capable doing that on a 400ex chassis??

should be fine, id run them stock and see how you like them and if you want better simply have them revalved and resprung.

untill such time u want to rework ur shocks u should set them up with all the adjustments the 450r shocks give u. this is a really good explanation of how to best set them up http://www.atvrideronline.com/tech/0708_atvp_suspension_setup/index.html

thanks guys. So, when i end up getting my +2 a arms in september, do you think it will lower it???

Depends on where the mounts are for the shocks, but they usually lower it a bit.

You could try some yfz shocks, they are a bit softer and drop the front some cause they are shorter. They do require cutting the top eye of the shock down about 1/8" each side to fit tho.

With my 450r shocks softened all the way up on preload my 400 (with holeshot gncc 20" rears/22" razr1 fronts) sits at the same height or maybe a hair lower than our other 400 that's all stock and has it's preload on the middle notch. Some of it may be due to differences in the tires but they're pretty close.

They're noticeably better for me on trails and miles better on jumps and the mx track. I still manage to bottom them lightly on flat landings, or pretty hard if I come up short on a double but that's to be expected I guess, I'm probably close to 230 with gear and have the preload all the way up, compression about a turn and a half from full soft, and rebound about a turn from full slow.

IMO a 14 tooth front sprocket and 450r shocks are the two best bang for the buck mods for a 400ex.

Since the 450R shocks are longer, don't you have to compress them some to fit in the stock a-arms? This would mean the ball joints are limiting travel and will wear out more quickly; I'm surprised nobody has been concerned with this issue.

Send the 450 & 400 rear shock to
C&D racing .Colby will set them up
so they will lower ride height .
Having done this to my wifes 400
will +2 aarms & +4 axle It's a whole
new bike .C&D knows his stuff :)

Literally a 1/2 inch longer, I didnt need to compress anything and it hasnt effected my ball joints at all.

Ok, I thought I read on here that they were too long for stock ball joint travel; thank you for clearing it up.

I have stock 450r's on my +2's. They make a perfect setup!! My preload is set all the way to the bottom, and it sits way to high... they are excellently tuned, and work great in the woods!! But not for MX like my bike is designed for... i am gonna get some YFZ shocks, because i can't justify getting my shocks re-valved and re-sprung because i still won't achieve my intended ride height... :(

What do you mean you won't achieve your intended ride height? If you get your shocks revalved and resprung, most places will correct extended and compressed lengths (the body should be machined down) without costing much more. Once you have correct travel, just choose your springs so you get desired ride height while still having bottoming resistance.
