I was wondering about this a while back, I asked my local shop owner about it, he called CT racing who used to build his engines back in the day. Alan Knowles told him the best thing to use was the newer CDI box or an aftermarket one, they mainly used that advance for alcohol engines they ran in the desert so they would build more heat. basically he said on a dyno there was no gain from one on a stock style engine and it caused the engine to build excessive heat. also one thing about the aftermarket CDI boxes like a dynatech, a bigger bore engine (like a 310 kit) will not run correctly with one, just found this out recently. ESR came up with an immediate answer, the engine was too advanced by the CDI and they were correct. hope this helps you out.
