View Full Version : Finally put the battery in the air box

So after lowering the 400 the chain was riding on the side of the battery box, so we decided to finally to put the battery in the air box.

We bought a gel battery so we could mount it sideways because I always hear of clearance issues with the brake. We also got to play around with some more fiberglassing. This stuff is incredible!

Nice work! Props for being creative and making it work

Are you doing anything to reinforce the plastic support tabs? I know those things like to snap even without a heavy battery in there :p

I guess I didn't think about that. Maybe we'll layer up some fiberglass over them and drill through it. Or bend a piece of flat metal so it lays flat with the plastic tab and then fiberglass.

I still want to know if it truly effects your intake airflow to have the battery in there

I actually like it on the side, I can tap whatever electrical into it easy, charging it is super easy cause its exposed-have to remove the seat to make that work if you mount it in the box.

But I guess I cant knock it since Ive never triedit.

GREAT idea on reinforcing the box with some fiberglass.

I definately can't argue with it being easy to get to on the side, but we were going to redo most of the connections so hopefully we won't have to get to it very often. On the other hand maybe rigging up some remote connectors with a cover would be nice if it ever needs jumped.

It has the opening on the front down low, plus we don't run a lid so I can't think it should do too much. Hell, having the end of the filter covered was the only reason I was ok with mounting the battery up next to it.

all i have left is a little bit more wiring and it will be completely done, and im goin to put rubber grommets in the box so the wires can run out with no moisture getting to the battery. The lid will get the top cut up mostly so i can put a filter over it.

IMO when my battery was on the side it was a freaking dirt trap, everything would get hung up in there.. Also it is more exposed to the elements, water snow rocks dirt, nastiness.. I have a plug that hangs out of the box for a tender or charger to hook into in case I have a dead or low battery, it works great.. As far as air flow being affected. I will say no way is it affected if you are running a open or cut top lid.. It would even be questionable if the box was totally sealed up imo..

To the OP nice going, but why didn't you glass the inside of the box??

there is some glass on the inside of the box, we just used the factory piece that the battery sits in to get all the angles right and make it look better on the outside of the box. i like your charger idea, but im guessin that the only time ill need to charge it is when its down for the winter or in the shop anyway, so ill just pull the seat and rear fenders off then. also the bottom hole is goin to get glassed in and then im cutting up my factory lid to make it look like one of those k&n lids, just a lot cheaper :D

I think perhaps ill be doing this mod sooner or later just because Im going to do the long travel XC link from GTT and you either gotta smack the battery mount/subframe rail in wards slightly or move the battery.

Def need to reinforce the box imho, the battery is heavy and if its not secured 100% it might damage the box.

I wonderif I can find an AL airbox I like, the extra strength would be worth it. or like bthompson use some fiberglass to reinforce the box.

I do mostly horseshoe racing and straight drags, but i do plan on strengthening the box to handle the weight of the battery for when i do lift it up to trail ride.

nothing is bent on the bike im just to lazy to latch the seat for pictures

i'm still goin to clean up the wiring, this was temporary just so i could mess around with it

this is all going to be torn back apart so i can sand everything smooth and repaint the box

When cost is a factor this is a good way to go, as long as it can hold up to the abuse.

You'd think an aluminum airbox at $200 is a logical next step, one I'm probably going to do this spring, and you know the aluminum will take the weight of the battery vs plastic.

200? Ive seen them on ebay for 100-150 all day and thats brand new :)

What they dont have that I dont like is they eliminate the snorkel. I kinda like mine having that piece-but I doubt it matters since I have no lid.

True statement - $150 with a lid on ebay....no brainer.

I'm pretty sure CFM's allows you to still run the snorkel, their ad confirms this on Ebay

I saw 2 different models, 1 with and one without.

I doubt the snorkels needed if you have an open airbox tho.

I have the CFM box. It retained the snorkel, however I made a custom lid with an outerwear prefilter.

So what Kind of shock is that??

Well i have been really hesitant to give out any info on this cause i have the lowest atv of anybody ive raced, but screw it. First i took out my factory shocks and put the atv down on 2x4's to figure out the length i wanted. Then i measured my eye to eye and started doing some research on different shock lengths, and since im not rich and can't afford elka or anything like that i came across sport bike shocks. The lengths are perfect and the ground clearance is exactly were i want it, the only thing i had to work on was the mounts and all i had to do there was grind down around the eye's a little to get them to fit in the stock mount. My rear shock is off a yamaha R1 and the fronts are off a honda cbr 600rr. I love doin custom stuff that just takes a little bit of thinking and a lot less money. By the way i sit about 1/2" off the ground and with these shocks there isn't hardly any flex so they are perfect when cornering. Any more questions just let me know.

all shocks are mounted in the factory location using factory bolts

I think it was a great idea!!!

I recently bought some 14 3/4 in, front shocks and a 16in rear shock for a no link lowered look.

I was gonna get sportbike shocks but couldnt figure out what would fit, now that I know what fits I mayy be upgrading again soon.

I only drag race and occasionally trail ride, I think those sport bike shocks would benefit me more then the ones I recently bought. Im gonna post pics soon of my +7 swingarm and new shocks.

Mine is low like yours also.

I can't wait to see the new swingarm. Should be a joy on the trails lol. I think that longer swingarm would help soften out the rear shock that he uses. It is pretty stiff. I have some vids of it launching in the yard and I think a little more give would help it hook better.

Mine still needs dialed in, but we have test and tune coming up 23rd of april so ill get some videos then and any more info on it

Got another shot of my 400, right now im in the process of glassing my rear plastic cause it just couldn't hold up to me flipping it or rolling it down a hill lol also plan on painting it white along with the fronts. then ill get the gripper seat cover put on and massage the front plastic to get a hood to fit, then its time for some led's :D
