yesterday i went and bought a new 2500 lbs winch and installed it on my 2000 400ex.

i pickedup a superwinch 2500 from basspro,im going to see how it performs today at 12:00 pm when my nephew gets off for lunch and we are going to hook it to his 400z and see how it performs.

is anybody interested in seeing a video of it in action around here in the yard just tinkering with it?

would be useful info for me atleast, as I am considering a similar mod for mine if I ever get it running properly.

Yes, it would be very interesting to see.
I would even like to see it hooked up to a overhead tree branch,... and lift itself completely off the ground http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n148/tri5ron/Emoticons%20and%20funny%20pics/smiley16.gif

Do it as a writeup with installation pics if possible.
Mounting plate install, Winch to plate install, fairlead, Wiring, Switch, any necessary bumper/frame mods, bracketry, stator/battery upgrades, etc.
also include the specs of the winch, power consumption, winch speed, weight, etc.

Looking forward to seeing it ! http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n148/tri5ron/Emoticons%20and%20funny%20pics/popcornsmilie.gif

i will take the video and take pictures of the mounting bracket i had to make out of 3/16 angle iron for strenght.will also show wireing install to.
any questions feel free to ask,by the way i did tie it to a tree and yes it lifted the atv with no hesitation at all.i dont have anybody here to film,i will post it when i do.

Well, it is his ride... and a winch would come in handy i reckon!

no your not,i was going to buy a 1500 lbs winch but decided to go with this instead.im going to try this on the atv but if it does not work for me im going to sell it to a freind of mine.he has a 660 grizzly and said he would buy it.

so all in all im not sure how well it will work on my 400,the only concern i have is on the drain on battery.as far as the winch weighing in at 18lbs it has not in the least affected the drivability of the atv.their was absulutly no sag on the front shocks at all i checked.if anything it will have a smoother ride with the winch.

im 43 years old so i dont jump the atv anyway but catching some air with it now could be an unpleasent landing, nose first.

the reason for the winch is me and all my freinds have sport atvs and i am so tired of pushing these things out of the mud after somebody gets stuck.my nephew is 19 and seems to think his ltz400 with reverse cant get stuck but last weekend i had to help him push that thing out of every mud hole on the trail.

so im hoping this takes care of this:

1.nephew got stuck
2.unwrape toe strap from my atv
3.tie toe-strap to my atv
4.tire toe-strap to nephews 400z WHILE WADING IN MUD UP TO MY ***
4.pull him out
5.unhook from my atv
6.unhook from his atv
7.rewrap my tow-strap to my front bumper
8.this is the last step where i have to sit down and rest after all of this and ask him what he was thinking going through a mudhole that deep?here is his reply everytime (I THOUGHT I COULD MAKE IT).

so long story short i prayed last night to the almighty PLEASE LET THIS WINCH WORK im hoping he is listening to me.

some time back, an older member did a very clean winch installation, with the smaller Warn RT15.
here is a link to his thread....

http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=328021&highlight=400ex+winch

I myself, as a
Trail rider,... and having ZERO Intrest, in competetive racing,...
like the idea.

I still want to have a decent level of performance, over a Utility type ATV,... but at the same time, I can enjoy a Sport ATV, with some unusual, non-popular, accessories too.

I guess it's kind of having the best of both worlds, (if that is possible).

When I was deciding what I wanted in an ATV,...
I figured that I could make a "Sport" ATV do Trail/Utility types of riding, much easierand cheaper, than trying to get a Utility type ATV, to have a decent level of Offroading performance.

I am 50 years old, and I too have no intrest, in trying to clear a double or triple jump,... But I do like to tear it up in the open desert trails.

I also occaisionally enjoy packing the ATV's down with Racks and Cargo bags, and doing an overnighter on the atv's alone, without the big RV. It's a blast !

Most of the youngsters here think it is practically Sacreligious to put a rack, or winch, on a "Sport" quad, and they have often given me alot of static for it.
I've modified mine so that it can go on or off, in less than 5 minutes.
I say, do what you like, It's your machine.

They may not,.... (But I "get" it :D )

yes i saw that post of his install,he installed the warn rt15 the same one i was going to install but decided to go with this at the last minute instead.i could not mount this 2500 down low it had to go to the top.his winch install deserves a 10 top notch work,i still have to buy a new bumper and make bracket to mount to bumper.

i have rode and tested the winch and so far it is performing perfect.

I say its overkill too, but we dont know his real need for one. perhaps he wants to be able to tow himself or others and maybe utility quads (which can weigh 800lbs easy!!!)

cjm you hit it on the nail head,me and all my freinds ride in a state funded atv park called finger lakes state park.they have 85 miles of trails and being mid-missouri their all dirt but mostly mud.

last summer the park started to let the 4x4 razzors and side by sides in the park.

last summer me and some freinds where rideing down a trail and i saw a guy running to use at full speed to catch us.he came up to us and said he was stuck in a mud hole and needed help getting out,so we followed him and crap he had a razzor buried in the mud up to the floor boards.

so i tied my 400 ex and my nephews z400 to it and we finally got him pulled out.he had no winch and the stock tires where no good for missouri mud.

he said he is going to get a winch now for sure,he offered us money for pulling him out and we all turned that down right away and told him someday we may need his help on the trails.we see that guy every once in a while and he has a winch now and is a freind.

i went with this 2500 for this reason, you never know what you will run into, and most of the mudholes at fingerlakes will swallow a sport or utility atv and some side by sides.

Then I totally agree its worth the overkill killer454, if its that muddy and you get sucked in its tough to get out.

Preciously the reason I dont ride in mud, I even avoid puddles when riding cause I have no fenders.

I will say the EX should be ok with the winch, be careful you dont max out the stator with it hooked up and I pray your quads heavy enough to yank with it. I tried a tow strap with a friends stuck in mud once, talka bout funny-my quad just spun and wouldnt drag him, we had to find a utility to yank.

I refuse to tow people out of the mud if they want me to wade thru it. No way, they did it they get to tie it off themselves.
