I"m mostly a trail rider ,but plan on getting on the local motoX trac again this summer. I got $1000 budget for my stock 400ex motor. thinking about doin a 416 w/cam. you guys got any other suggestions, or better ones.

I would suggest getting a manual and do the install yourself. Find a trust worthy person to do the machining. With the money saved, you can do other things like a port/valve job. All this could be done within your budget with you doing the work. Spending wisely is the key.

I would buy a good set of shocks before you do anything to the motor. Good shocks will make you faster than motor mods.

Here what ya should Do(In my opinion)

1st: Go buy a set of Elkas without rezzies.

That with leave you with abotu 500 bucks.

Then go and buy a 11:1 piston 416cc and a Sparks Drop In Cam.

You with have about 50 bucks left over and you can take that and buy alot of gas/oil for the summer.

Then you will have a good engine and you will be able to go fast with it..

I got another $700 set aside already for shocks. I need to know the best way to go with the motor, but still keep it dependable.

JE 416 piston 10/5/1 ratio or 12/1 if u plan on running racing gas. HOT CAM STAGE 1 or Sparks Drop in cam.

Piston 189
Cam 129 or 159 depending which you choose
Boreing 50
Gasketts like 25

There is a good motor setup for around 400 bucks. You will be reliable and have more HP.

I would extend the a-arms and swingarm. Even with a stock motor someone with those mods still stands a chance to win the race... there's no point to a great motor with no stability cause then you can only catch up in the straight aways.

I'de get :

Ross 87mm 10.8:1 piston-415cc's ($130),

Hotcams stage 2 cam ($130)

New rockers from Honda ($90)

White Brothers E-Series slip on ($220)

K&N power up kit with filter ($180)

That saves you $250 for labor to the machine shop and misc. parts and gaskets.

That should make for a pretty strong engine.
