hey guys, in the process of building a 416, and just wondering if a header will help that much? right now i have a hmf slip on but they dont seem to make just a header for the 400ex, so will any other header work? or do i need a non slip on muffler? and i may need to buy one anyways because my stock one cracked again...lol

thanks

yeah. most headers will work with the hmf slip on. ik of a few people who run a hmf slip on with a fmf powerbomb header.

I have the Powerbomb Header, and it is very nice!! lowered the DB level and added a few seat of the pants HP. It will need the header welds ground out just like the stock header, but the webs aren't near as big.

By looking at your sig., your engine is stock with a timing key.

For the money you will spend, you would be best served, to keep your slip-on with your stock header.
(reweld your cracks or replace with something like this...)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MODIFIED-400ex-header-w-shield-headpipe-pipe-exhaust-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27b97b3595QQitemZ17061 5584149QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Grind down the welds at the headpipe if you like, and get a 450r carb, one of ZRpilot's adapters, and a good foam airfilter.

Jet accordingly, and you will have 3 times the gains,..... for 1/4 to 1/3 the cash spent, as you would get from any aftermarket header.
That should put you right around 31-32 HP, up from your stock 24-26 HP.

A aftermarket header will give your stock motor 1 to 2 hp MAXIMUM Gains.

so you have to ask yourself,...
"Is 2hp really WORTH $450 to $600 Bucks ?"

My wallet says NO !

That little bit of gain you would get would be on the top end of the rpm range and it would take away a little of the low end torque. I still run the stock head pipe even with all my mods. You have to understand it’s not going to do much good just opening up part of the air flow through the motor, like just the pipe and or carb and filter change. If you don’t open up the whole thing like porting, valves, cam, then it won’t do much good.
You have to combine all those things together to get a real increase in power.
You could do a port job and cam for that $450.00 and have more power gains.

i have to second that notion, i used to have a 400ex with a sparks x-6, it was deff all around the best pipe i have ridden on a 400ex. used to pull holeshots on built 450s at the track with the bike perfectly setup.

even pulled a piston, cammed, ported yfz, till 3rd on pavement, damn i miss my ex :(

they chop off the collar of the slip on to accept the headpipe from what i understood. the tech there says it`s no different than purchasing a ful system from them.

250 bucks??? Thats nuts!

Find a local welding shop that can weld Aluminum and it might run you maybe 75 bucks at most.

No way I would pay 250 for what equates to maybe 30 mins of work.

Wasnt sure if he was talking about the silencer or the header itself. Some silencers are made of AL.

If it is 250 for everything thats a better deal. Way he worded it-250 for them to modify your stuff lol.

I'm looking for a aftermarket muffler that is a plug and play to the stock header that sounds similar to stock. Any suggestions?

(muffler on eBay but link will not hyper) Slip-On Silencer Exhaust Muffler HONDA TRX 400EX Pipe

^What about this one? Direct bolt on to the stock header?

^Were you referring to the big guns system? I was talking about the LEXX muffler that comes with the silencer on the stock header.
